Second half scoring rally by the Saints tops Tornado in STAC contest

UV, B-G and Oxford handed MAC losses

BINGHAMTON – A lower scoring first half affair became a 21 point victory for the host Saints, snapping Norwich’s six-game winning streak Tuesday night with a final of 65-44.
The Tornado and Seton Catholic combined for a total of 12 points in the first quarter and went into the halftime break with a score of 17-16 in favor of the home team.
Unfortunately for the visiting team, Seton’s leading scorer Brett Rumple was able to find the basket in the second half to lead his team to the victory.
While the game was tightly contested, the Norwich defense held the Saints go-to guy to just six points. However, Rumple tallied 29 in the second half to finish with a game-high 35 points.
Norwich’s turnovers and 18 second-half free throws led to Seton Catholic taking over the lead for good in the final 16 minutes of play.
Overall, the Tornado had a tough time scoring as the starters combined for 25 of the team’s 44 points with JT Vinal leading the team with 12.
Tommy Flanagan and Carson Maynard, the team’s scoring leaders for the season, came away with just 13 points between the two of them. Flanagan ended the night with 11 points – his final three coming with 20 seconds left in the game – while Maynard registered two points in the second quarter.
Norwich’s bench tallied 19 points as Torin Lawrence chipped in nine, Keegan Franklin scored six and Anthony Cathcart added four.
Vinal finished with a double-double in the contest as he ripped down 22 rebounds in the loss.
The Tornado (7-2), who was recently on the honorable mention list for the Class B state rankings, host Chenango Forks on Thursday. It will be Norwich’s first home game since their season opener against Chenango Valley on December 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
Unatego 58, Unadilla Valley 51
OTEGO – After holding the lead through the second and third quarters of play, Unadilla Valley fell to the host Spartans Tuesday 58-51 due to Unatego’s free throw shooting in the final stanza.
The Spartans took a total of 26 foul shots in the fourth, making 17 of their attempts to pull ahead late in the contest and take the Midstate Athletic Conference victory.
The Storm held a 13 point cushion heading into the last eight minutes of action but were unable to hold the lead as they scored just eight points in the fourth.
Unatego’s Shea Barber, who went 14-for-16 from the foul line, led the Spartans in the fourth quarter with 14 of his team-best 18 points.
Unadilla Valley trailed by a point after the first quarter but started to build their lead in the second behind Caleb Parker’s eight points prior to the break. The UV senior then came out of the intermission to score nine of the Storm’s 13 third quarter tally, pushing his team to the double digit lead.
Parker recorded all eight of Unadilla Valley’s points in the fourth, finishing with a game-high 30 points in the loss. He also grabbed 15 rebounds to register a double-double on the night.
Teammate Cameron Osborne ended the night with eight points and 11 boards before fouling out late in the game. Brock Davis chipped in seven.
Unatego’s Miles Mohrien scored 15, aiding in the win for the Spartans.
The Storm host Delhi on Thursday for another MAC contest at 7:15 p.m.
Delhi 59, Bainbridge-Guilford 40
DELHI – The Bobcats kept the game within reach until Delhi’s balanced scoring fourth quarter allowed the home to pull away for the 59-40 MAC win Tuesday night.
Bainbridge-Guilford’s opening quarter scoring consisted of three made 3-pointers – one to open their scoring and one with 17 seconds left in the stanza – to trail by one at the end.
Before the intermission, B-G’s Michael Stevens and Kolby Furgason each made another 3-pointer to help their team go into the locker room ahead by just five points.
In the third, the Bobcats’ Haiden Burns came alive to record 12 of the team’s 13 points as the visitors continued to hold the deficit to single digits.
However, in the final eight minutes, Delhi saw five different players register points to combine for 19 points. Alex Haight paced the Bulldogs with six in the quarter. He led all scorers with 19 points.
Tyler Bruce chipped in nine points while Delhi had three scorers tally eight in the win.
Burns finished with a team-high 17 for the Bobcats while Furgason scored nine and Stevens ended the night with seven.
Bainbridge-Guilford will look for a win when they end the week with back-to-back games. First B-G will play host to Afton on Thursday before traveling to Sherburne-Earlville on Friday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
Greene 62, Oxford 34
OXFORD – The Trojans jumped out to an early lead, using a 22-6 run in the first quarter and never looked back as they downed the host Blackhawks Tuesday night 62-34.
Nate Barry of Greene scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the first and recorded eight of the Trojans’ nine points in the final eight minutes of play.
Greene’s scoring slowed down in the second quarter as they registered 12 points as a team with Alex Frair scoring five.
Oxford, on the other hand, found an offensive rhythm to score 11 in the stanza ad Matt Roach hit two 3-pointers to pace the team with six. He finished with 11 in the game.
The Blackhawks were led by Pleasie Hughey III’s 16 points as he came out of the halftime break on fire, scoring nine in the third. However, Oxford was held to just four points in the fourth.
Evan Walters also reached double figures in the Greene win, scoring 16 and Frair finished with nine.
Greene heads to Sidney Thursday while Oxford is off until January 15 when they host Unatego. Both games are at 7:15 p.m.
