NORWICH – The Purple Tornado honored the three seniors on this year’s roster – Dante Geislinger, Mikey Squires and Dakota Powers – prior to the start of the match against Chenango Forks but key pins at 145 and 170 pounds allowed the Blue Devils to spoil the senior night celebration for Norwich.
Geislinger, Squires and Powers all earned wins during their final match on the home mat while Andrew Brown, Joey Marvin, Max Morris, and Mason Edwards all picked up another victory for Norwich. The Tornado, however, gave up four bouts due to forfeits and lost 12 points due to the pinfalls at 145 and 170.
The 145 pound match kicked off the Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional match with Norwich’s Ashton Jenkins leading 4-2 late in the third period. Zander Arnold of Chenango Forks scored two points with a reversal, tying the match at 4-4 but quickly put Jenkins’ back down to the mat to secure the 5:30 pin for his team.
Marvin of the Tornado was well on his way to at least a decision win, leading 9-2 in the third. Starting in the down spot of the 152 pound bout, Marvin reversed and pinned Forks’ Lee Abby at 4:39 to tie the match at 6-6 to give the home team fast response.
Powers took an early lead at 160 pounds with a takedown in the first period but back-to-back stalling calls awarded the Devils’ Victor Areiolla two to bring the score to 2-2 in the third. Powers, showing some signs of fatigue as it was his first dual meet of the season after returning from an injury, did not let up as he scored a reversal late in the bout to win 4-2.
At 170 pounds, Norwich’s Robert McIntyre took on Forks’ Ethan Howell. With the home team holding a 9-6 advantage in the meet, Howell led 5-4 heading into the final period. It didn’t take long before the Blue Devils’ wrestler made his move to land a reversal on McIntrye and set up the pin for the win.
Squires, who was wrestling up on his senior night at 182 pounds, nearly captured a technical fall as he led 15-0. Not letting go of his last nearfall count that gave him 15 points in the match, Squires worked to get Chenango Forks’ Brad Needles down for the pin. At 4:51, the official slapped the mat and the Princeton-bound senior put his team ahead 15-12.
Back-to-back forfeits by Norwich gave the visitors a nine-point margin with eight bouts remaining in the meet.
Next was the match that many in attendance were waiting for as the Tornado’s Tyler Rice took on Fork’s Lucas Scott. The two were wrestling partners during the younger years and have faced each other in many championship bouts at tournaments – include recently at the Windsor Christmas Tournament.
The first period went scoreless but Scott scored first in the second, escaping the bottom position to go up 1-0 with two minutes left in the bout.
Rice started the third with an escape of his own but Scott lined up a shot for a takedown and landed it to take a 3-1 lead. With seconds remaining in the match, Rice scored his second escape and quickly turned to Scott looking for the last-second takedown but time expired before he was able to land a shot and Scott captured the one point win.
Morris earned another win for the season as he picked up a 8-1 decision. The Tornado youngster scored two takedowns in the first two periods and added a reversal in the third. Nearly pinning Forks’ Ty Bender as he had him on his back, Bender was able to roll out of it to award Morris two points. However, Morris was well in the lead and cruised to the seven-point victory.
After a Norwich forfeit at 106, Geislinger stepped to the mat against the Devils’ Tyler Ferrara. The senior quickly took a 6-1 lead after two takedowns and a nearfall count. The wrestlers did not score in the second, keeping the score the same with one period left in the match.
Geislinger escaped the bottom to start the third and took down Ferrara to add to his lead. Ferrara escaped the grasp of the Norwich senior but Geislinger again whipped his opponent back down to the mat and added a three back points to end the match with 14-4 major decision.
Brown earned a pin with 14 seconds left in the first period. Brown held a 8-3 lead after four straight takedowns but the last one set up the pin over Forks’ Dylan Eggleston.
Cooper Rice, former Oxford wrestler who moved to the Chenango Forks school district in the summer, picked up a 5:25 pinfall over Norwich’s Nate Murphy. Cooper held a 12-0 lead before holding the Tornado wrestler to the mat late in the third. His win put the visiting team ahead 39-28 with two matches remaining.
Returning to action after an injury earlier in the season, Mason Edwards earned Norwich six points with a 54 second pin – the fast win of the meet – to pull the Tornado within five points.
However, with no one left in the Norwich lineup, Forks received a forfeit to end the match at 45-34.
Head coach Bob Hagenbuch will now take Geislinger, Brown, Morris, Rice and Squires to the Eastern States Classic this weekend, held at Sullivan Community College Friday and Saturday. The five will be part of the largest in-season tournament that sees teams from all over the east coast.
Following the weekend, Norwich will travel to Oneonta for their next divisional meet.
