Bears coast to MAC divisional win over Sidney
BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville Bears cruised to a 60-18 Midstate Athletic Conference win over Sidney Wednesday night.
BGAH picked up 30 of their team points due to forfeits by the Warriors squad and earned another 24 with victories by pinfall.
Darren Florance kicked off the match with a 2:57 pin over Sidney’s Lucas Demott and later in the meet, Jacob Terpstra, Dylan Decker and Devon Rowe captured three straight pins – all in the first or second period – to put the Bears ahead for good by that point.
Zach and Trever Harrington of the Warriors were awarded forfeits by BGAH while Joey Florance, Brody Oleksak, James Craig, Rocco Arduini and Timmy James scored the forfeits for the home team.
Jose Bivar secured an 11-1 major, Brady Buttice captured a technical fall at 152 pounds and Zach Gardepe picked up 5-4 decision to give other Bears wins in the match.
Lincoln Constable earned the lone pin for Sidney in the match at 120 pounds.
Over the weekend, BGAH tied for the most titles won at the Ross Kordell Rotary Tournament as the Bears had three crowned champions. The Bears came away with nine podium finishes and placed second overall with 206.5 points, trailing only winner Burnt Hills by two points. .
The Bears’ Darren Florance (99), Brody Oleksak (145) and Austin Eggleston (195) all earned yet another tournament championship this season as each won their weight class in Oneonta.
Florance earned a spot in the championship bout after winning in the semifinal with a 7-4 decision. Facing Wyatt Meade of Unadilla Valley/Unatego, the BGAH 99-pounder pinned at 4:14 mark to take first.
Oleksak – who earned the tournament’s sportsmanship award – captured his second pinfall win over the tournament over Oneonta’s Ardell Wellman in the first period to reach the finals. There, he pinned Karter Rude of Athens (Pa.) to walk capture his second title of the season.
Eggleston pinned Dalton Wells of Oneonta in 1:37 to win his championship at 195 pounds. The finals match pinfall was his third of the tournament, like teammate Oleksak.
The Bears, who had nine of the 12 wrestlers who attended the Ross Kordell Tournament, place. Joey Florance was second at 106 pounds while James finished third at 285. Terpstra (120), Buttice (152), Craig (170) and Arduini (220) all placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
BGAH heads to the Red Devil Invitational at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Saturday. Action is set to start at 10 a.m.
