NORWICH – Despite a late-game scare by the Chenango Forks Blue Devils, the Norwich Purple Tornado boys basketball team held on to defeat their visiting opponent 66-57 Thursday night.
Forks went ahead 54-52 late in the fourth after chipping away at Norwich’s margin through the first three quarters of play, taking their first lead of the game. However, Norwich went on an 11-3 run in the final two and half minutes of play to take the lead back and capture the Southern Tier Athletic Conference win.
The Tornado jumped ahead early in the first stanza with fast-break play from created opportunities on the defensive end of the floor. Norwich’s fast-paced style came back to haunt them in late in the second quarter and the Blue Devils were able to pull within six at the halftime break.
Chenango Forks continued to keep testing the Tornado, cutting the deficit down to three points as the two teams entered into the final eight minutes.
Before taking the lead with three minutes remaining, Forks flirted with taking the lead as baskets were exchanged between the two teams several times. A 3-point field goal put the Devils ahead.
Norwich quickly responded as a big defensive rebound by Jahlil Jones after a Chenango Forks missed free throw led to a fast bucket for the Tornado to start the 11-point spurt.
Rebounding from a quiet performance against Seton Catholic earlier this week, Carson Maynard ended the night with a game-high 27 points. Maynard was big in the fourth, pacing Norwich’s 20-point quarter with 11 points.
JT Vinal, another key factor during the run, scored all of his points in the second half – including a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line down the stretch. The Norwich senior finished with 11 points.
Just a minute and half into the contest, Vinal recorded a steal but it wasn’t just any regular stat. With the early defensive play, Vinal passed Charlie Wightman (186 career steals) as the program’s all-time steals leader. And he didn’t stop there. Vinal registered another career milestone by pulling down the 500th rebound of his high school career 10 seconds later.
Tommy Flanagan and Jones also reached double figures in the win, scoring 14 and 10 respectively.
Norwich (8-2, 4-1) hosts the Greene Trojans Saturday night for a non-league, Chenango County battle at 7:45 p.m. The game was originally supposed to kick off the season but with a snow storm canceling school, the game was rescheduled for Saturday.
