SULLIVAN – Five of Norwich’s wrestlers took on the large field of the Eastern State Classic Friday and Saturday and returned home with a sixth place team finish out of 162 team from all over the east coast.
Dante Geislinger placed second in the 113 pound division while Mikey Squires finished third at 170 pounds. Max Morris, Tyler Rice and Andrew Brown also participated in the biggest tournament of the season next to the New York State Championships.
Wrestling in five matches before the finals, Geislinger secured his spot in the championship bout after two pins, a technical fall and two decisions.
In the title match, Geislinger went up against the top seed of the bracket and New York State No. 1 of Division-1 ranking Stevo Poulin.
As the Norwich senior is listed at the top in the Division-II rankings, the match was a highly anticipated match for all to watch.
In a tough match throughout the six minutes of action, Poulin was able to come away with the 7-3 victory.
Squires captured two wins in his first two matches of the tournament – a 12-1 major and a 9-3 decision – before taking on the top seed in the quarterfinals.
Andrew Donahue of Wyoming Seminary out of Pennsylvania was the top seed of the 170 bracket but it didn’t phase Squires as he battled in the match. Separated by just three points, the Tornado senior fell by a 6-3 decision.
Bouncing back quickly, Squires earned a 54 second pin to move into the consolation finals. There, he picked up another first period pin, taking down Jd Moore of Levitt Town Division at the 1:23 mark.
While the other three Norwich wrestlers did not place, they picked up good wins over the course of the two days. Brown earned a pin in his opening bout and added a 8-1 decision win in the wrestle back rounds.
Morris also picked a pinfall, taking down Erick Velasquez of Oyster Bay right before the end of the second period. Morris, however, fell in his next two matches.
Rice met George Lebberes of Ardsley in the second round after receiving a first round bye. The two battled by Rice came out the winner of a 3-2 decision. Rice then lost a 3-0 decision and was injured in that match. His injury resulted in a next round forfeit.
Norwich also had three wrestlers take on the field of the Dan Wickham Classic in Unatego on Saturday. Mason Edwards won the 132 pound division as he defeated Marcellus’ Ryan Moses 7-6 in the finals.
Edwards earned pins in his other three matches, including a 34 second pin – the fastest pinfall victory in the tournament.
Ashton Jenkins defeated Dustin Copeland of Walton/Delhi 9-7 for his lone win while teammate Dakota Powers fell one win shy of placing, going 3-2 for the tournament. The Norwich senior picked a 3:59 pin as well a 15-4 major decision and a 5-4 decision for his three victories.
The Purple Tornado travel to Oneonta on Wednesday for a Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional meet. Then Norwich heads to Johnson City for the STAC Championship on Friday and Saturday.
