Norwich DPW battles broken water main

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Department of Public Works (DPW) discovered a broken water main Sunday morning, and worked until midnight to ensure the issue was solved.
According to City of Norwich DPW Superintendent Ed Pepe, the city was made aware of the broken water main Sunday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., and the DPW worked for hours to fix the issue.
“My only guess is that the broken main happened due to the rapidly changing weather,” said Pepe. “We found out about it yesterday morning around 10:30 a.m.; we started working on it right away, and finished up around midnight.”
Pepe said a full restoration of the area will occur in the spring, and that the DPW utilized multiple shutoff values while working in the area. Pepe added that the water main was leaking water for approximately 12 hours, that approximately 100,000 gallons of water leaked, and that it will not impact anyone’s water bills.
“We were fixing a 12-inch water main, and our guys got soaked working throughout the day,” he said. “Water main breaks are a part of having water mains in the ground, its going to happen.”
He added that anyone living in that area who has dirty or rusty looking water should run their water until it clears up.
“If you have any problems just let us know,” said Pepe.
City of Norwich Alderman Matthew Caldwell said the DPW quickly made officials aware of the issue, and worked hard to ensure that it was fixed as soon as possible.
“I was alerted by our DPW Superintendent Ed Pepe around 11 a.m., the broken line was between Hayes Street and Conkey Ave., and by the time I got there they were already working on it,” said Caldwell. “I really appreciate the hard work the DPW is doing to respond to issues like these, and the superintendent speed in informing me of the issues.”
“Our residents are lucky to have them and their expertise.”
He said after checking back in at approximately 5:30 p.m., he was made aware that they were working on resolving water pressure issues at that time.
Officials said anyone that has issues receiving water in that area, or continues to have dirty water after letting it flow should reach out to the DPW at (607) 334-1240.
