Brindisi votes in opposition to War Powers Resolution to limit president on Iran

WASHINGTON – Congressman Anthony Brindisi, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, was one of the few Democrats to vote against his party's measure to restrict the military powers of the president.

The resolution was proposed by Democrats following an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq by Iran-back militias and then an airstrike by U.S. Forces that killed a top Iranian General in Iraq.
The day of the vote January 9, Brindisi issued the following statement regarding his vote on the War Powers Resolution on Iran before the House of Representatives:
“Qasem Soleimani was a terrorist with the blood of American soldiers and allies on his hands. There is no question he was brought to justice.

I voted against today’s resolution because I believe it is dangerous to limit our ability to respond to new and evolving threats from Iran and its proxies. The American people do not want war with Iran, but we have to be able to protect the safety of the American people and our service members in harm’s way.

Congress must demand answers, conduct rigorous oversight, and work with the Administration on a comprehensive, pragmatic strategy for the Middle East that promotes peace and regional stability. Above all, the safety of our nation and its service members must be our top priority.”
