Blackhawks wrestling place second out of 23 teams at Caz Invite

CAZENOVIA – The Greene/Oxford Blackhawks wrestling team continued their successful season at the Cazenovia Invitational over the weekend as they brough home a second place team finish with 178 points, just 4.5 behind winner Indian River.
The Blackhawks had six wrestlers take a spot on the podium by the end of the Saturday tournament with senior Paul Baker standing at the top as the champion of the 152 pound bracket.
Greene/Oxford had a total of four reach the finals of the invitational with Baker coming out as the lone title winner. Brady Smith, Noah Kennedy and Owen Marcin all fell in the championship bouts to come away as runner-ups.
Hunter Page ended the weekend with a fourth place finish and teammate Aiden Marcin placed fifth.
Baker earned his championship with a 7-3 decision win in the finals over Watertown’s Adam Ortega. On his way to the finals, the Blackhawks’ senior earned to pins and a 10-5 decision for a 4-0 weekend.
Kennedy reached the finals with two early round wins by a 1:42 pinfall and a 7-4 decision. In the title match, the Greene/Oxford 195 pound senior fell to Homer’s Same Sorenson in a two-point decision.
Smith captured two pins – including one in just 20 seconds – as well as a 10-1 major decision for his first three matches, reaching the finals of the 132 pound bracket.
In the championship, he matched up against West Genesee’s Nate Wade. Wade came out with the early shots and captured the 18-3 technical fall over Smith.
Owen Marcin picked up a 7-4 decision and a 12-1 major to earn his spot in the 106 pound finals match but was caught by Watertown’s Jack Clough in the second period. At the 3:41 mark of the bout, Marcin was pinned to finish second.
Brother Aiden Marcin earned two wins over the weekend, pinning both of his opponents in the winning matches and ultimately found his way back through the wrestle back rounds to place fifth at 113 pounds.
Page finished with two decision wins, capturing a close 3-2 win over Carthage’s Alec Strife. He also won by a final of 8-4 in the wrestle backs before falling in the consolation finals by a first period pin.
The Blackhawks take on Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville in a Midstate Athletic Conference dual meet Wednesday. The inter-county, league match is scheduled for start at 6 p.m. in Afton.
