Lady Yellowjackets sting Norwich with late fourth quarter spurt

NORWICH – Separated by just two points entering the final eight minutes of play, it looked as if the Norwich and Oneonta girls game Wednesday night was going to come down to the wire.

That was until the Lady Yellowjackets made their offensive possessions count during the 11-0 spurt in the early minutes of the fourth, taking a 53-40 lead.

Norwich’s Emily Evans ended the scoring drought for the home with a layup but Oneonta continued to run, ending the quarter with 25 points to take a 67-45 Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional win over the host Purple Tornado.

Evans added another basket from inside the paint and Sydney Coggins hit one of two foul shots to combine for Norwich’s five points in the closing minutes of the loss – just the third on the season for the Lady Tornado.

In the ping-pong type of contest, the two teams went back-and-forth through the first three quarters of play as Norwich and Oneonta exchanged several lead changes.

Each team was able to gain a slight advantage throughout but it didn’t last long as both found an answer to swing the momentum back into their favor.
