Drake, Eagles fly past Lady Storm for a MAC victory
Delhi keeps Oxford off the boards to win
DEPOSIT – The Lady Eagles of Deposit/Hancock took an early 23-11 lead in the first quarter and built on that lead in the second to claim a Midstate Athletic Conference victory over the Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley.
In the first quarter, Laycee Drake scored at will for the Eagles as she came away with 12 of the team’s 23. Drake finished the game with 33 points to lead all scores.
“[Laycee] Drake is impressive,” said UV’s head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “She could have scored any time she wanted to.”
The Deposit/Hancock junior pushed the Eagles ahead by 22 at the end of the first half, tallying another 12 points in the second stanza.
Unadilla Valley put 17 points on the scoreboard in the first two quarters of play and came back in the second half to outscore the home team 29-24 but the damage was done in the first 16 minutes by Drake and Deposit/Hancock.
The Storm’s head coach brought up the fact that her team missed 18 free throws in the contest. “You just can’t leave 18 points at the line and expect to win,” said Whitbeck.
UV’s Kyleigh George paced the team with 15 points in the loss while Meegan White added 11.
Ariel Kellam finished in double figures for the Eagles in the scoring column, ending the night with 15 points.
The Storm take on Harpursville Tuesday night for a non-league game. The Hornets are set to host UV at 7:15 p.m.
Delhi 58, Oxford 36
DELHI – The host Bulldogs kept the Blackhawks off the offensive glass in their 58-36 MAC win Thursday night. As Oxford has controlled the second chance opportunities in many of the games this season, Delhi held the visiting team to just nine offensive rebounds and just four second chance points.
On the opposite end of the floor, the Bulldogs pulled down twice as many to come away with 10 points off the offensive glass.
Delhi took a 16-4 lead after the first quarter and continued to push the pace in the second as they went into the locker room ahead by 19 points.
Oxford reached double figures as a team following the halftime break, scoring 12 but the home team once again outscored the Blackhawks by tallying 20 in the third.
The Blackhawks put together a 12-7 run in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to overcome Delhi’s first three quarters.
Oxford’s Madalyn Barrows finished with a team-best 13 points and nine rebounds. Karley Miller and Caitlyn Quigley came away with six points each as well.
Delhi’s Sophia Wakin ended the night with a game-high 19 points while the rest of the team had balanced scoring throughout.
Oxford is in action on Saturday when they host Windsor for a non-league contest. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 p.m.
