Purple Tornado wrestlers wrap up fourth at STAC Championship tournament
All eight reach semifinals and place in Top 4; three come away with titles
JOHNSON CITY – Expected to be two days of wrestling, the Southern Tier Athletic Conference championships turned into a full day of action instead on Friday, due to the weather that was dumped on the area Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Tornado squad wasn’t phased by the late change to the tournament format as all eight wrestlers brought home a top four finish in their respective weight classes and Max Morris, Dante Geislinger, and Mikey Squires were all crowed 2019-2020 STAC Champions.
In the field of 16 teams, Norwich placed fourth overall with 170 points. Some of those teams carried rosters of 15-plus participants. The Tornado team of eight was the fourth smallest in size of the teams in attendance.
Morris earned his first conference title of his young career, winning all three of his bouts at 99 pounds. The Norwich freshman took an 1:11 pinfall win in his first match of the day and then snuck away with 2-0 decision win over Chenango Valley’s Trevor Cortright to move into the finals. There, the Tornado youngster won the championship by a pin at the 3:16 mark of the title bout.
Geislinger picked up yet another STAC tournament crown with a 2:48 pin over Horseheads Tommy Dale in the finals. Prior to the championship match, the Norwich senior pinned all of his other opponents within the first minute of the bouts. One of his pinfall wins took just 16 seconds. It was in the semifinals of the 113 pound bracket, securing his spot in the finals for the fifth straight year.
Earning his fourth straight conference championship was Squires in the 170 pound weight class. The Princeton bound senior wrestled just three matches all day and walked away with another STAC title after a 25 second pin, a 16-0 technical fall in the semifinals and a 10-0 major decision over Owego’s Cameron Bundy in the finals.
Norwich’s Tyler Rice placed second at 285 pounds after falling to Chenango Forks’ Lucas Scott by a 3-2 decision for the second time this season. The two have met three times this season and all three have been decided by three points or less.
Rice landed in the championship match with back-to-back first period pins. His first match took all of 54 seconds as he defeated Elmira’s Landon Chalk. In the semifinals, the Purple Tornado junior finished off Logan Bailey of Owego in 33 seconds.
Andrew Brown, Mason Edwards and Dakota Powers all ended the conference championships with a third place finish, bouncing back after their semifinals match loss to win their next bout.
Brown captured to pinfall wins to move into the semis but was defeated by Horseheads’ Zach Levey in a 7-3 decision. In the consolation finals, Brown took down Windsor’s Tory Hayes by a 7-2 decision for third.
Edwards moved into the semifinals at 132 pounds with a 16-0 technical fall in his first match. However, Corning’s Drew Witham topped Edwards with a technical fall at the 3:30 of the bout. Responding in the consolation finals with a pinfall win, Edwards took the third place spot on the podium in his second STAC championships appearance.
In his final trip the conference tournament, Powers picked up two pins in the first and second round. In the semifinals, the Norwich senior fell by a 6-2 decision to Jarrett O’Connell of Horseheads. Finishing third in just his third tournament of the season, Powers defeated Forks’ Lee Abbey with a six-point decision.
Norwich’s Joey Marvin pinned his way to the semifinals, winning one of two in 34 seconds. He then went up against Colsten Volpe of Chenango Valley, hoping to earn a spot in the 152 pound finals. Unfortunately, it was not the outcome that Marvin was hoping for as he was down in a 14-6 major decision win.
Battling in the consolation finals, Marvin faced James Hoover of Windsor. In a close two-point decision, the Norwich junior fell to the Black Knights wrestling. He placed fourth overall in the weight class.
The Purple Tornado get set to wrestling in back-to-back road matches before participating in the Section IV Division-II Dual Meet Championships on Saturday. Norwich heads to Dryden on Monday then travels to Chenango Valley Tuesday. Both meets during the week are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
