Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce continues work on community center

BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce has been developing a community center over the last six months and officials are looking for skilled volunteers to help with interior work.
According to Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce Secretary Christine Smith, the new building is located at 7 Prospect Street in the Village of Bainbridge. Smith said the building is going to be open to anyone in the community, but that the chamber needs volunteers to help with the next phase of construction.
“The community has really needed a place that’s available for anyone to meet, and we really haven’t had that in our area,” said Smith. “We decided that Bainbridge needed a community center, a place for local organizations to meet.”
She said local churches have requested a location to play recreational volleyball, which the chamber is hoping to provide as well.
Smith said before the chamber began construction on the center, the property held an old chicken coop that was refurbished into a scout house.
“Needless to say, it was pretty run down, and it needed to be demolished,” she added. “Many many loads of gravel were donated to level the location out, and waste recovery donated by covering the cost of takeaway to make it happen.”
She said the chamber covered a large portion of the cost for the initial phase of construction, but now the chamber is hoping volunteers from the area can help them finish the project.
“We’re soliciting volunteers that can do concrete, construction, electrical, and plumbing that will help us out with the inside,” said Smith. “It’ll have a kitchen, community meeting room, recreational area as well.”
Smith said the new community center will be nearby the Bainbridge Highschool, and that hopefully community members will make the most of it. She added that Bainbridge local Matt Germond has done an excellent job coordinating resources for the project, and that the community has been incredibly supportive throughout the process.
“We’re keeping our Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce facebook page up to date,” she said. “Anyone who wants to follow our progress can see updates there.”
