Lady Tornado suffers second straight setback in close loss to Spartans
NORWICH – With 6:43 remaining in the ball game, the Maine-Endwell Spartans took their first lead of the contest against the host Lady Purple Tornado.
The two teams exchanged leads three times over the next four minutes of play and were tied at 47-47 after Norwich’s Margaret Dougher got to the rim with 1:58 remaining.
At the other end of the floor, M-E’s Allie L’Amoreaux knocked down a 15-footer for the final lead change as the Spartans captured the 57-52 win.
The Tornado’s Abby Flynn made the score 52-51 with less than 30 seconds remaining and head coach Josh Bennett quickly called a timeout.
As the timeout was being awarded to Norwich, some after the play contact led to Bennett pleading with the officials to make a call as it wasn’t the first time in the contest this occurred.
After several displays of unwarranted physical contact over the course of the game, the final blow was more than enough to bring Bennett on the floor to speak with the referees.
Instead of seeing what the Tornado head coach was trying to discuss, Bennett was hit with a technical foul and the Spartans’ Katie L’Amoreaux went to the other end for two free throws. Making both attempts, Maine-Endwell went ahead 54-51.
Another three free throws made by the Spartans while the home team made just one led to the final difference of five points.
The Spartans, who took 26 free throw attempts throughout the game, did their damage down the stretch with all eight of their made shots at the charity stripe coming in the crucial closing minutes.
At the opposite free throw line, the Tornado attempted just nine shots, making six for the entire contest.
Norwich came out of the gate quick, opening the game on a 7-2 run in the first before closing out the quarter ahead 15-8.
The Spartans closed the gap down to a point in the second quarter but the Tornado’s Dougher hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Norwich an eight point lead.
Maine-Endwell’s Sophia Pelton cut the deficit down to five before the intermission with an and-1 play on a put back attempt.
As the momentum started to swing in favor or the Spartans in the third quarter, Norwich was able to cling to a one-point advantage with the fourth quarter of play remaining.
Maine-Endwell chipped away at the Norwich lead that was built in the early part of the quarter with some big shots from behind the 3-point arc.
Amanda DeSantis came away with two deep balls in the second half, making two of the four converted by the Spartans in the contest. Her shot made in the corner a 1:17 into the fourth was the big one her team needed.
As the game was set up to go down to the wire, Norwich and Maine-Endwell went point for point until the Spartans were able to come up with the stop needed to hold off the Tornado.
Pelton, Katie L’Amoreaux and DeSantis combined for 47 of the Spartans 57 points. Pelton led all scorers with 17 while the other two Spartans finished with 15.
Norwich’s Dougher ended the night with a team-best 16 points and Flynn tallied 14.
The Purple Tornado (7-4) are now off until they travel to Susquehanna Valley on Monday, January 27. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
