OXFORD – Hosting a second senior night for the Blackhawks – this time in Oxford’s gymnasium – Greene/Oxford captured yet another dual meet victory this season on the matt as they defeated Unatego/Unadilla Valley Wednesday 45-27.
The Blackhawks won six of the 11 matches wrestled during the dual meet action, five coming by way of pinfall. However, an exciting and much needed win in the match was picked up by Greene/Oxford’s Hogan Ludolph, earning an 8-6 sudden victory decision win.
In the extra period of wrestling, the first wrestler to earn a take down is awarded the win. Ludolph earned the two points in overtime over Jacob Stevens of Unatego/Unadilla Valley at 152 pounds, giving the home team a commanding 39-12 advantage midway through the meet.
Unatego/Unadilla Valley started with a 6-0 lead after the first of three meet forfeits kicked off the match. Owen Marcin of Greene/Oxford quickly took the visiting team’s lead away with his 3:08 pin at 106 pounds and a forfeit awarded to Gabe Gorman of the Blackhawks and a pinfall win by Kaden Wakefield gave the home team a 12-point edge.
Greene/Oxford never lost the lead again in the match but Josh Meade of Unatego/Unadilla Valley brought the meet to a six-point difference with is pin over the Blackhawks’ Victoria Fleury in the second period.
Three bout victories by the home team and the third forfeit of the match separated the two teams by 27 points. Greene/Oxford’s Tyler Brown and Brady Smith each came away with a pin in the first period while Damien Hitt was awarded the forfeit. Then Ludolph added his big win for four straight by the home team.
Unatego/Unadilla Valley made the meet interesting at 160, 170 and 182 pounds as they claimed back-to-back decision wins before Samuel Cole’s 1:38 pin over the Blackhawks’ Abram Parsons cut the deficit down to 15 points.
With no match at 195 pounds and Noah Kennedy’s pin over Chris Price of the visiting team, Greene/Oxford secured the meet win.
At 285 pounds, Gabe Frailey of Unatego/Unadilla Valley closed the night out with a 4-3 decision win over Skyler Graves of the Blackhawks.
Greene/Oxford (7-2, 1-1) is off for a week before traveling to Sidney for the final Midstate Athletic Conference dual meet of their season. Two days later, the Blackhawks will travel to Ithaca for the last of the dual meets on the 2019-2020 regular season schedule.
Morrisville-Eaton 60, Sherburne-Earlville 30
SHERBURNE – Just four matches were wrestled during the Section III dual meet between Morrisville-Eaton and the host Marauders on Wednesday. The two teams spilt the wins, coming away with two each and all four were won by pinfall but it was the eight forfeits by S-E that gave the visitors the 60-30 win.
Prior to the start of the meet, head coach Bim Palmer and the entire Sherburne-Earlville wrestling team coaching staff honored the six seniors of this year’s team for their hard work and dedication to the program over the years.
Conner and Chyle Foster, Colby Spavin, Morgan Lakin, Ethen Eldred and Alex Thompson were recognized as the six are set to graduate in June. Of the six, Conner Foster, Lakin and Thompson were awarded forfeit wins while Chyle Foster and Spavin took to the mat for some senior night action. Eldred was kept out of the lineup as he was still recovering from illness.
Foster was trailing by a point in the second period when he was caught by Eric Warner of Morrisville-Eaton and was pinned at 3:44.
Spavin took down Trent Oaks at the end of the first period with a slam to the mat and it looked as if he was going to pick up the pin in the early minutes of the match. However, Oaks was able to fight to get out and the period ended.
In the second, Spavin started on the bottom. Within in the first 30 seconds of the bout, the senior picked up a reversal and put Oaks to the mat for a two-count nearfall. Spavin then worked his way to the pin, hearing the slap of the mat by the official at the 3:14 mark of the match.
At 120 pounds, Selina Moore came away with a big win for the Marauders. Trailing 2-0 at the start of the second period, Moore started in the top position. She worked to lineup her move, which she rolled Morrisville-Eaton’s Blake Perry to his back and picked up a pinfall victory at 2:36.
The other weight wrestled in the dual meet was 195 pounds. S-E’s Riley Fogg took on Morrisville-Eaton’s Robert Marshall. Marshall earned the win with a first period pin over Fogg.
Sherburne-Earlville wrestles against Little Falls Thursday night for the second half of the back-to-back matches. The match is schedule for a 6 p.m. start time at Little Falls.
