Lady Tornado snap 3-game losing streak with win over Sus Valley
CONKLIN – Unlike the first meeting between the Lady Purple Tornado and Susquehanna Valley, Norwich controlled the game from start to finish as they picked up the Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional win over the Sabers Monday night, 61-36.
The win snapped Norwich’s three-game losing streak and at a crucial time as the Tornado started the second half off their divisional schedule.
The 22-5 run that Norwich went on to open the game set the tone early. The always pressuring defense that the Purple Tornado caused it’s usual chaos as the host Sabers did not reach double figures until the fourth quarter of play.
In the first quarter, Emily Evans and Abby Flynn combined for 18 of the team’s 22 points. Both players contributed a team-best 14 points as Norwich received balanced scoring throughout.
MacKenzie Hess, one of two Norwich players who hit two 3-pointers in the game, drained one from behind the arc in the second quarter. Maddy Morris, who hit the other one in the same stanza, also knocked down two from long range during the game.
The two scored six of the 10 points tallied in the quarter before half time and Norwich held a 20-point advantage over Sus Valley. Hess ended the night with eight points while Morris chipped in six.
Margaret Dougher, who is one of the team’s leading scorers this season, finished with seven points in the game and five came after the intermission as Norwich went on 20-8 scoring run in the third.
The Purple Tornado’s Jordan Hess and Grace Bookamer came off the bench and saw plenty of playing time in the fourth. Both scored in the final eight minutes as Jordan registered four points Bookmer made a bucket.
The Sabers outscored Norwich in the final quarter 16-9 and were led by Jenna Cotter in the scoring column. Cotter ended the night with a game-high 15 points.
The Lady Tornado traveled to Adirondack Community College Saturday afternoon to take on Class AA Saratoga Springs. The fifth-ranked team in the New York State Girls Basketball Top 25 topped Norwich 61-40 in a non-league contest.
Saratoga Springs opened up the game outscoring the Tornado 22-13 then held the Section IV team to two made 3-point field goals in the second quarter to take a 35-19 lead at the end of the first half.
Norwich scored 21 points in the second half but the Class AA from Section II tallied 26 for the win.
The Tornado were led by Flynn and Dougher as each scored 12 in the loss.
Norwich (8-4) travel to Windsor on Thursday for a 7:15 p.m. start.
