Good shooting and big defensive push give Storm fourth win of season

Marauders take conference win over Canastota

NEW BERLIN – An impressive shooting night to go with a strong defensive effort in the second half by the Storm gave the host Unadilla Valley team a non-league win over Laurens Monday night.
“We shot the ball really well all game,” said UV head coach Matt Osborne. “We also played some outstanding defense in the second half to come away with this win.”
Leading the way offensively was the Storm’s Cameron Osborne, pouring in a game-high 20 points. Osborne finished with 10 rebounds as well to capture the double-double in the scoring column.
The game started out with a tight deficit after the first quarter as UV held a 14-11 lead.
However, the Storm outscored the visiting Laurens team 22-13 in the second to go into the locker room ahead by 12 points.
Out of the intermission, Unadilla Valley showed no signs of letting up as they went on a 21-10 run to bring the lead to a 23-point difference.
In the fourth, the two teams were close in scoring but offensive spurts in the middle quarters by the Storm gave the home team the 73-47 victory.
UV’s Brock Davis ended the night with 19 points and teammate Devon Fairchild tallied 18– 12 coming on made 3-pointers.
Jordan Weir led Laurens with 18 points while colleague Chris Long chipped in with 14. Omar Andrades finished with 12 points, all coming from behind the 3-point arc.
In the fourth quarter, Unadilla Valley’s Garrett Proskine subbed into the game. Proskine, who suffered severe injuries after a very serious farm accident this past fall, returned to the court for his first action of the season.
The Storm (4-10, 2-5) will host Morris at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday for their second straight non-league contest. UV will return to Midstate Athletic Conference action on Friday when they travel to Afton.
Sherburne-Earlville 60, Canastota 34
SHERBURNE – The Marauders jumped out to an 18-1 lead in the first quarter over the visitors of Canastota Monday evening.
Between the large first quarter advantage, balance scoring by the Sherburne-Earlville squad and a huge team defensive force, S-E came away with a 60-34 Center State Conference win over the Red Raiders.
“It was a good win for us,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Kevin Vibbard. “We played outstanding defense to hold them early and often. Offensively, we were making the extra pass and guys were making open shots.”
In the first, Taylor Grzymkowski scored 12 of his team-best 16 points to pace S-E. Robert Hill chipped in four points during the quarter while John Oley added a basket.
The Marauders scoring slowed down a little for the second quarter as the home team only put up 11 in the stanza but their defense was still strong, holding Canastota to just eight points and allowing S-E to take a 20-point lead into the intermission.
Out of the halftime break, six different players scored a bucket for Sherburne-Earlville to extend the lead over the Red Raiders, despite the visiting team scoring 10 points in the third.
The final eight minutes of play saw S-E’s Aiden Slater knock down two 3-pointers to give him six points for the game and to lead the team in the scoring column for the fourth.
Troy Fleming also finished the game with six points while both Oley and Hill tallied eight for the night.
Canastota was led by Greg Olden and Will Snow as each scored eight in the game.
Sherburne-Earlville (6-9) host Sidney of the Midstate Athletic Conference on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
