NYSEG increases power outage number, residents already notified
NORWICH – According to New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) representatives, more customers will be affected by the company’s scheduled power outage Thursday afternoon than originally announced.
According to NYSEG Manager of Regional Operations Tom Ryan, representatives who previously stated that a second round of robocalls would inform individuals of an impending power outage were incorrect.
Ryan also said the previous estimate of 300 people impacted was incorrect and that approximately 445 people would be without power for several hours today.
The planned power outage will take place from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, in the area of State Highway 23 along Tanner Hill in the Town of Norwich.
Ryan said NYSEG’s is working to transfer power and fuse lines to the recently constructed solar power plant in the Town of Norwich.
Ryan corrected information sent out from NYSEG on Tuesday saying individuals that live in the area with businesses were mistakenly told their businesses would also be without power. He said several individuals contacted have businesses in the City of Norwich.
“The only people that are going to be effected by this outage are the people just past Norwich Beverage, going up to around Chenango Lake,” said Ryan. “No one in the City of Norwich will lose power.”
“Customers were told that their businesses would lose power when they reached out, so I can understand where there would be confusion.”
Ryan explained everyone that needed to be contacted through a robocall was contacted, and so there would not be any further calls.
“We’re only as good as the phone numbers that we have,” said Ryan. “We’re going to work to ensure that this isn’t an issue moving forward.”
According to Regional Outreach and Development Manager Melany Putnam, no one with life support needs will be affected by the power outage.
Weather reports show a range of temperatures between 18 and 32 degrees during the time power is scheduled to be out. The project is expected to take approximately five hours.
