Lady Vikings drop game to league opponent McGraw

UV grabs road win over Afton; Battle of the birds goes to Eagles

MCGRAW – Separated by just three points after the first quarter, the Lady Vikings of Otselic Valley looked to hang with the host McGraw team.
Unfortunately, OV was held to just two points in both the second and third quarters of play while McGraw shook off their slow start and took control on the way to the 56-17 win Monday evening.
McGraw tallied 34 points in the middle two stanzas, outscoring the visiting Vikings by 30 points during the 16 minutes of play.
Otselic Valley was able to put six points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and hinder the home team’s offensive push, limiting McGraw to just 12 in the final eight minutes.
The Vikings were led by Leah Kalin’s nine points and three rebounds in the loss. Teammate Cassidy Will added six and Tori Foster chipped in two points.
McGraw’s Emily Fish finished with a game-high 18 points while Alyssa Wilbur ended the nights with 17.
OV’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday at home against New York Mills. Game time is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
Unadilla Valley 57, Afton 22
AFTON – The Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley took charge early in Friday’s game against host Afton and never looked back as they captured the 57-22 MAC win.
UV jumped out to a 28-5 first half lead behind the play of Kadence York and Kyleigh George. York tallied 11 of her game-high 13 points while George – making her first appearance in several games after an ankle injury – added five in the first half.
Storm senior Meegan White had a big night from the foul line, going 8-for-10 for the game as she finished the game with 12 points to give Unadilla Valley three scorers in double figures.
After the intermission, UV outscored Afton 29-17 in the second half to come away with the big win.
The team game was on display for the Storm as they finished with a total of 15 assists and 24 steals. Leading the way with rebounds was Keona Courtright, ending the night with a team-high nine. All but one Unadilla Valley player scored at least one point in the win.
Afton’s Hunter Moffitt scored just two points but came away as the Crimson Knights’ stat leader with eight rebounds and six blocks. Mallory Carman led the home team with five points.
Unadilla Valley hosts Harpursville Wednesday for senior night while Afton heads to Walton on the same day. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
Deposit/Hancock 69, Oxford 54
OXFORD – Leading after the first quarter, the Oxford Blackhawks had a shot to take down Deposit/Hancock – one of the top teams in the MAC – Friday night. However, a 26-6 run in the second quarter gave the visiting Eagles a 17-point advantage over the host Blackhawks.
The lead stayed in favor of Deposit/Hancock for the remainder of the game as they picked up the road win over Oxford with a final score of 69-54.
The Eagles shot 48-percent from the floor and kept the Blackhawks off the offensive glass – one of the key strengths for Oxford all season long – as they held the home team to just seven offensive rebounds.
On the other end of the court, Deposit/Hancock pulled down 18 boards and scored 16 second chance points off their put-back attempts.
Out of the halftime break, Oxford outscored the Eagles 18-10 to cut the lead down to nine points with just eight minutes left in the contest.
Unfortunately for Oxford, Deposit/Hancock went on a small run again to build the final difference of 15 points.
The Eagles were led by stand-out guard Laycee Drake’s game-high 37 points. Drake ended with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds and nearly came away with a triple-double with her eight assists in the win.
Deposit/Hancock also saw a double-double from Kelsey Young as she ended the night with 10 points and 10 boards.
Oxford had three players reach double digits in the loss as Caitlyn Quigley led with 19 points. Karley Miller added 15 points with eight rebounds while Madalyn Barrows also pulled down eight boards and finished with 14 in the loss.
The Blackhawks head to Bainbridge-Guilford on Wednesday for a 7:15 p.m. game.
