Greene/Oxford girls finish as runner-ups at MAC Bowling Championships

Howard rolls highest series of tournament; Norwich tops Oneonta

HANCOCK – The Fox Bowling Center in Hancock hosted the Midstate Athletic Conference Championship action on Tuesday. Seven teams took the to lanes starting a 10 a.m. and by the end of the day, both the Hancock Wildcats boys and girls bowling teams captured the MAC titles.
The Greene/Oxford girls team finished in second behind a strong performance from Erin Howard. The senior bowler ended with the tournament’s series high, bowling a three-game total of 652 pins – including the third highest single game score of 246.
Howard bowled a 204 and 202 during the day, reaching the top games board with both, while teammates Mikayla Trost and Halia Tallett also had single game high scores. Trost’s best game of the tournament was a 199 and Tallett’s games added up to be the fifth highest for all the girls, rolling a 557 for the match.
The Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley placed third in the championships, finishing with a team total of 2,316 pins. Paige Catena bowled two games (188 and 184) that reached the high game leaderboard and teammate Bryn Grant matched Catena’s 184 to help the team place in the top three.
Bainbridge-Guilford finished fifth on the girls’ side as Catherine Fuller led the way with a 567 match series – the fourth best of the day. Afton/Harpursville placed seventh.
On the boys’ side of the MAC championship tournament, Greene/Oxford was third with 2,679 pins. Jakob Funnell finished with the fourth best series score of all participants, recording a 640. His final tally included a 243, the sixth highest single game score of the tournament. He added 203.
Funnell’s colleague Cole Johnson aided in the third place finish for the team as he bowled a 223 in one of his three games and also placed in the leaderboard for high games.
Unadilla Valley took fourth with a 2,653 pin total and were followed by Bainbridge-Guilford for fifth. Afton/Harpursville placed sixth.
UV had three bowlers finish the day with four of the 26 best single game scores and the Bobcats had one member listed.
Nick Guller of the Storm had the highest on his team with a 217 while Will Rumovicz registered both a 214 and 213 for the day. Brandon Kneale tied Rumovicz with a 213.
B-G’s Thomas Lord’s high score was just two pins off the Storm bowlers as he rolled a 211.
Norwich 5, Oneonta 0
NEW BERLIN – The Purple Tornado swept the match against Oneonta on Tuesday behind Cameron Birtch’s 701 match series score.
The Norwich senior scored a 254 in the second game to record the highest single game of the match as well. Birtch posted a 224 in game one and a 223 in the third, leading to his 700-plus three-game total.
Kai Scheer finished with the next best series total for the Tornado with a 512 while Dawson Robinson totaled a 490.
Norwich’s Cooper Burton rolled a 194 for the second highest single game score for the home and registered a match series of 472. Parker Smith, the fifth and final bowler on the Tornado’s scorecard bowled a 446 to give all members a tally above 400 pins. Norwich totaled 2,631 pins.
Matt Rigas posted a team-best single-game score for the Oneonta Yellowjackets with a 221 in the second game while colleague Devon Loucks had the team’s highest series with 590 pins – including his 217 in the first game. Oneonta ended the match with a pin total of 2,236 pins.
Norwich heads to Midway Lanes in Endicott for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships on Monday at 3 p.m.
