Roach’s game-winner leads Oxford past the Bobcats in MAC showdown

OV picks up second straight victory

BAINBRIDGE – With 2.2 seconds left in the game, Oxford’s head coach Booker Davis called a timeout to draw up a play to score the game-winner.
Out of the quick break in the action, the play was designed to go to the corner for the Oxford senior Matt Roach. Roach quickly caught the ball and fired up the shot.
The picture perfect ending for a battle between Bainbridge-Guilford and the Blackhawks ended with Roach draining the shot from the baseline corner to steal the 47-44 win over the Bobcats Thursday night.
“I was actually shocked he was able to get open and get the shot off, as I’m pretty sure everyone in the gym knew I wanted the ball to go to [Matt] Roach,” said Davis.
Oxford tied the game at 41-41 with 2:50 left and took the lead 20 seconds later. The Blackhawks held onto the slight advantage until the third 3-pointer of the quarter fell with 38 seconds remaining in the game, tying the contest once again at 44-44.
To start the game, Oxford held a 13-8 lead after the first but Haiden Burns of B-G brought his team within three before the halftime break. Burns tallied nine of the team’s 11 points in the stanza to held keep the Bobcats close before the start of the second half.
In the third, Bainbridge-Guilford’s Trent Thornton registered 12 of his game-high and career best 21 points to give his team a 35-33 lead with just one quarter of play remaining.
The final eight minutes saw the Bobcats take a 41-35 lead before the Blackhawks clawed their way back into the game and Roach knocked down the game winner.
Roach finished with 13 while teammate Owen Marvin ended up with a team-best 14 points spread throughout the game. Pleasie Hughey III also finished in double figures, scoring 12.
Both Roach and Marvin recorded double-doubles in the win as Roach pulled down 13 rebounds while Marvin grabbed 11 boards. The senior for Oxford added six assists to his stat line and Marvin recorded. four steals.
To go along with his career high, Thornton dished out four assists. Burns finished with nine points and seven rebounds, tying teammate Ryan Porter in the rebounding column. Michael Stevens chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Oxford takes on Unadilla Valley on Tuesday while Bainbridge-Guilford travels to Greene the same day. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7:15 p.m.
Otselic Valley 62, Poland 24
POLAND – The Otselic Valley Vikings cruised to their second straight win Wednesday, taking down host Poland 62-24 in a non-league contest.
Four different Vikings reached double figures in the win with Garrett Wood leading the offensive charge with 16 points. Braeden Davis scored the next highest total for OV with 13 while Matthew Wetterer added 12 and Levi Lyon finished with 10.
Lane Adams was just a point shy of double digits in the scoring column, ended the night with nine points, but Adams dished out a team-high four assists. Wetterer pulled in six rebounds and Lyon recorded a team-best seven steals while Davis and Wood each came away with six in the win.
Otselic Valley bolted out to a 28-1 lead after the first quarter but the scoring slowed for the Vikings in the second as they tallied just six points, taking a 34-5 lead into halftime.
Out of the intermission, the team found their rhythm again, scoring a total of 28 points in the second half to capture the big win.
The Vikings, now 5-11 on the season, were scheduled to play Madison but the game has been postponed to a later date. Otselic Valley is now slated to host Cincinnatus on Monday at 6 p.m.
