Norwich’s first quarter rush sees big win against Forks

BINGHAMTON – Rescheduling quickly after the Friday snowstorm postponed Norwich’s showdown with Chenango Forks, the Tornado came away with a 67-44 win over the Blue Devils in a Saturday matinee special.
The time change didn’t hinder Norwich’s game as they quick went on a 19-2 run in the first quarter, holding Forks to just two made free throws by Ethan Cetton.
Norwich’s senior scoring trio of Carson Maynard, Tommy Flanagan and JT Vinal all tallied double figures to pace the Tornado in the win.
Maynard recorded a game-high 21 points to lead all scorers, registering 15 of those in the first half of play and led Norwich to a 34-18 advantage by the break.
In the second half, Tommy Flanagan of the Purple Tornado took over the scoring with three 3-pointers in the third quarter. The senior ended the night with 18 while colleague Vinal spread his 11 points throughout the game.
Norwich outscored the Blue Devils in all four quarters of play and once again recorded 19 points in the fourth as seven different players added a basket.
Coming off the bench in the final eight minutes, senior Kyle Shepherd knocked down a 3-point field goal while Lex Genute and Keegan Franklin each scored from inside the arc.
Chenango Forks was led by Aiden Anderson’s 15 points in the loss.
The Norwich boys are set to host Oneonta on Tuesday for a Southern Tier Athletic Conference clash between the two rivals. Prior to the 7:45 p.m. start, head coach Tom Collier and the Norwich boys basketball booster club will honor the six senior members of the 2019-2020 roster.
