Late-game excitement ends with Lady Tornado loss

ONEONTA – Norwich’s Abby Flynn went to the line with her team trailing by two points with 31 seconds left. Missing the front end of the two attempts, Flynn made the second to cut the deficit to one point.
On the ensuing possession, the Lady Tornado put on their usual hard-nosed, full-court pressure defense to force the host Yellowjackets to make a mistake.
The strategy worked as Oneonta’s Yuliah Johnson broke the press but threw a pass that sailed over her teammate’s head and out of bounds, awarding the ball back to Norwich.
Getting two chances in the final 22 seconds of the game, the Purple Tornado were unable to convert and the Yellowjackets were able to come away with 42-41 win at home.
The win secured the Southern Tier Athletic Conference East Division title for Oneonta.
The Yellowjackets’ Ava Eichler drained a 3-pointer in the early minutes of the game, giving the home team a 5-4 lead. However, pushing the pace right from the start, Norwich built an 8-0 answer to go ahead 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Tornado continued to pull away from Oneonta and were able to get up by as many as 10 points.
Buzzing right back into the game were the Yellowjackets, led by Angelina McGraw’s five consecutive points, and the home team chopped the lead down to three points (25-22) before the end of the first half.
Out of the intermission, Oneonta continued to hold the momentum as they put together a 9-2 run to start the second half of action. Hannah Johnson knocked down a 3-point basket for the last of the nine points, giving the Yellowjackets their first lead since the opening minutes.
Like their opponent had done earlier in the contest, the Purple Tornado answered back with 6-1 run to close out the third and the 33-32 lead with the fourth quarter to play.
Norwich extended the margin to as many as four points before the Yellowjackets responded with six unanswered points late in the fourth.
McGraw found two tough points on the inside and Eichler scored a quick bucket in transition to tie the game at 40-40. Then McGraw finished in the lane after a Yuliah Johnson pass for the eventual game-winner.
McGraw led all scorers with 17 points in the Oneonta win while teammate Anika Buzzy finished with nine. Eichler ended with seven points.
Flynn scored a team-best 15 points for Norwich – nine of those points coming from the free throw line. Sydney Coggins recorded nine points in the loss and Margaret Dougher chipped in with seven.
The Purple Tornado hosts Union-Endicott on Friday at 7:45 p.m. Before the start of the varsity contest, Norwich head coach Josh Bennett and the girls’ basketball booster club will honor the seniors of the 2019-2020 team.
