Bears and Blackhawks see several in Section IV championships after big day at class qualifier
WALTON – Both the Greene/Oxford and Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville wrestling teams saw two stand at the top of the podium following the finals bouts of the Section IV Class A Qualifier Saturday in Walton.
The Blackhawks’ Kaad’n Wakefield took the title at the 113 pound weight class while Noah Kennedy repeated as a class champion the 195 pound division.
Capturing his second straight class title for the Bears was Brody Oleksak, winning the 145 pound bracket. BGAH also had Timmy James capture the 285 championship, improving on his third place finish from a season ago.
Wakefield of the Blackhawks took on top-seeded Jose Bivar of BGAH in the finals. Bivar, who had already taken on a Greene/Oxford wrestler in the second round, earned two pins to get to the title bout for 113 pounds. Wakefield reached the finals with a pin and a 3-1 decision, setting up the Chenango County showdown in the finals.
The Blackhawks’ wrestler was crowned champion with a 3:07 pin, upsetting the top seed of the bracket in the second period.
Oleksak found himself in the finals after a 1:39 pinfall and a 15-0 technical fall in the semifinals. The Bears’ repeat champion defeated the second seed of the division in 4:36, pinning Dryden’s Bobby Brothertone.
Kennedy received a bye in the first two rounds, sliding into the semifinals against Chris Barned of Marathon. After sitting all day, many thought it may take a little for the Blackhawks’ senior to get started. Kennedy went onto the mat and quickly shot for the takedown.
After landing the 2-point move, Kennedy immediately worked for the pin. 14 seconds after the match started, the official slapped the mat to signal the win for the Greene/Oxford wrestler. In the finals, Kennedy earned the back-to-back titles with a pin in the second period.
BGAH’s James needed just 29 seconds to pin Greene/Oxford’s Skylar Graves and a chance to move into the semifinals.
In both the semis and finals, James earned a pinfall victory at 3:06, defeating both Logan Jamison of Marathon and Walton/Delhi’s Kayleib Stanton for the first place finish.
The Bears finished the rest of the tournament with six place winners to gain 158 points, coming away from the day as the runner-up for team scores. The Blackhawks captured fifth place out of the field of 13 teams with 125.5 points and saw five other wrestlers place in the top five.
All first through fifth place finishers from both the Class A and Class B qualifiers move onto the Section IV Division II Championships, which are set to take place starting at 10 a.m. in the Broome County Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton.
Greene/Oxford will send Owen Marcin (fifth place at 106 pounds), Brady Smith (third place at 132 pounds), Damien Hitt (fourth place at 138 pounds), Paul Baker (fourth place at 160 pounds) and Hunter Page (third place at 170 pounds).
Smith, Hitt, Baker and Page all reached the semifinals of the tournament but fell, sending each wrestler to the consolation finals. Smith and Page then came away with wins to finish third.
BGAH’s Darren Florance (second place at 99 pounds), Joey Florance (second place at 106 pounds), Jacob Terpstra (fourth place at 120 pounds), Brady Buttice (fifth place at 152 pounds), and Rocco Arduini (forth place at 220 pounds) will move onto the sectional championships on Saturday. Teammate Dylan Decker finished sixth in the 132 pound division.
Seeds for the Division II brackets were released early this week and a follow-up article will be in a later edition of The Evening Sun.
