Troopers thwart burglary in progress
GUILFORD – As state police were enroute to another call January 28, they noticed suspicious activity at a nearby home and stopped to investigate.
Troopers discovered two men allegedly committing a burglary at a deceased person’s residence, stealing items from within and then attempting to hide in a nearby field as police approached. Police caught one suspect and the other fled the scene but was later arrested.
Connor J. Audette, 20, of Guilford and Joseph B. Schneider, 25, of Oxford were both charged with third-degree burglary. Schneider was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
According to New York State Trooper Aga Dembinska, the two men were in the process of burglarizing a residence in the Town of Guilford when police drove through the area in a search for an unrelated individual.
“While attempting to locate another unrelated individual with an outstanding warrant on January 28, troopers and investigators spotted Audette and Schneider hiding in a field off of County Road 36 in the Town of Guilford,” said Dembinska. “Troopers found this suspicious and attempted to make contact with the two men.”
“Troopers ultimately discovered that the duo was in the process of burglarizing a residence on County Road 36 where the owner had died.”
Dembinska said Audette surrendered and was detained by troopers but Schneider attempted to flee the scene. Dembinska added that Schneider was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of a New York State Police K9.
“Schneider fled on foot but was captured with the help of a K9 unit,” she said. “It turns out that he had multiple warrants out for his arrest in the City of Norwich.”
Audette was arraigned in the town of Bainbridge court on January 28, where he was released on his own recognizance and was scheduled to appear in the Town of Guilford court on February 11, 2020. Schneider was transported to Norwich City Police where he was wanted on two warrants.
Schneider was later processed by state police investigators on January 29 and arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court.
