NORWICH – A total of 12 3-pointers made by the Norwich Lady Purple Tornado paced the team to a 72-39 win over Union-Endicott on an emotional and eventful senior night contest.
Tornado head coach Josh Bennett and the Girls Basketball booster club honored the four seniors – Halea Eaton, Jenea Davis, Abby Flynn and Emerson Burton – before the start of the game in front of a packed crowd.
Injured in the second game of the season, Eaton took the floor for the starting five for the first time since the said contest. Union-Endicott allowed Norwich to take the opening tip and the Purple Tornado kicked the ball ahead to the senior.
One dribble into the basket, Eaton fired up one attempted but missed. After gathering the rebound, the second chance went off the backboard and through the net to give the senior the final two points of her four-year varsity career.
As agreed, Norwich then allowed the visiting Tigers team to score an uncontested basket at the other end and the score was tied at 2-2.
The 3-point baskets by Norwich then rained down in the first half allowing the home team to jump out to a 47-20 lead after the two quarters of play.
Sydney Coggins drained six 3-point field goals – three in each of the first two quarters – as the junior was on fire and couldn’t miss.
Flynn and Margaret Dougher each added one before the intermission, helping the Purple Tornado get out to the commanding lead.
After scoring 13 points in the opening quarter, Union-Endicott’s offense slowed down due to the Norwich defense. The Tornado held the Tigers to a total of 14 points in the second and third quarters of play – just three made baskets from the floor.
In the fourth, U-E nearly outscored Norwich as they tallied 12 points in the stanza. However, the two of the Tornado seniors prevented that from happening.
Flynn posted 11 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth while Emerson Burton put in a layup to cap Norwich’s scoring in the quarter.
Coggins registered 19 in the points column with 18 coming from behind the 3-point arc. Emily Evans, who paced the Purple Tornado in the third quarter with nine points, finished with 15 for the game.
Ashley Scott of the Tigers ended the night with 21 points to lead her team in the loss.
Norwich now waits for the Section IV seeds to be released. The seeds are set to be announced on February 19.
