NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA is still accepting donations for their Open Door Scholarship fund. The scholarship helps people struggling with program or membership fees take part and promote healthy living.
According to Norwich Family YMCA Director Jamey Mullen, this scholarship is one of the ways the Y is staying inclusive for its community, and each year the Y raises at least $100,000 towards that goal.
Co-chairs of the campaign James Doig and Rita DeMarko also spoke about the scholarship and why they got involved.
“One of the many reasons I agreed to co-chair this campaign this year, is because of a strong belief in the Y, including the programs, the guidance, and direction it encourages, and the positive socialization it provides,” said Doig. “Every person, young or old, who has a desire and need to join the Y should have that opportunity, and the Scholarship Campaign helps to provide just that.”
Doig said he joined the Norwich Family YMCA in 1975, and has continued to be an active support since.
DeMarko said she joined the Y in 1987 after receiving a job offer while living in Syracuse, and moving to the Norwich area. She said a key part of the Scholarship Campaign is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the Y and its programs.
“The Y is a great place, and everyone should have the opportunity to join,” she said. “If you’ve contributed, we thank you and ask that you continue your ongoing support at least at the level you’ve previously given, if not more, to help meet the increasing need.”
“If you haven’t, we welcome and encourage you to make a donation to help the Y carry on its critical work, particularly for those who can least afford it.”
Mullen said that those who are interested in donating to the scholarship can stop into the Y and speak with him. Mullen added that those who wish to learn more about the campaign may contact (607) 336-9622 for additional information.
He said that he wanted to thank everyone who has continued to support the YMCA and believe in its work. He added that supporters enable the Y to provide life-changing opportunities and accessibility for everyone.
