Seven athletes eye New York State title

ALBANY – Ethen Eldred and Alex Thompson of Sherburne-Earlville along with Noah Kennedy of the Greene/Oxford Blackhawks were awarded wild cards to the New York State Wreslting Championships, held on Friday and Saturday, February 28-29 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

The three at-large bids were announced Wednesday afternoon on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association website with the full list of participants set to take to the mats in a week.

Eldred, Thompson and Kennedy all placed second at the sectional championship tournament, earning the chance to receive a wild card in their respective weight classes.

Thompson currently holds a 29-1 record – his only loss coming in the final at the Section III Division II tournament – and will return to the state championships for the second straight year.
