BINGHAMTON – After avenging their double overtime loss to Unatego on Tuesday with a win over the Spartans in the semifinals, the Greene Trojans traveled to the Binghamton University Events Center to take on the league regular season champs of Delhi in the Midstate Athletic Conference Championship.
The first meeting of the season between the two teams ended with a double overtime loss for the Trojans. In a much different setting with the conference title on the line, the game was tight until the third quarter when Delhi built a nine-point cushion.
The Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to double figures in the fourth quarter, pulling away with the 62-51 win over Greene to earn the MAC championship – a first for Delhi since their win over Unadilla Valley in 2017.
Alex Haight of Delhi led all scorers with 24 points while teammate Tyler Bruce was also in double figures with 13 points.
Greene’s Nate Parker led the third-seeded Trojans with 14 points while Nate Barry and Drew Erickson each tallied 10 points in the loss.
As the first quarter came to a close, the score was 17-16 in favor of the Bulldogs. Delhi built a six point lead and thought they were headed in to the locker room with said advantage.
However, the Trojans’ Barry hit a banking deep 3-pointer before the buzzer to cut the deficit down to three points at the intermission.
Hoping the momentum was going to swing in their favor after the buzzer-beater by Barry, Greene was looking repay the Bulldogs for the earlier season loss.
Yet, the big shot by Barry before the break didn’t phase the Delhi Bulldogs like the Trojans had hoped. Delhi pulled ahead by the end of the third quarter by nine, which was set up by the balanced 13-7 run in the stanza.
During the big run, five different Bulldogs’ contributed points to build the advantage and ultimately the win for Delhi.
Both teams were hot from behind the 3-point line in the contest. Delhi made five shots from beyond the arc while the Trojans drained four shots – including Barry’s shot before the end of the first half.
Alec Frair and Evan Walters each chipped in six points for Greene in the loss while Trent Rapp ended with a basket and Nolan Butler finished with three points.
The Trojans now prepare for Spencer Van Etten in the first round of the Section IV Class C boys basketball tournament. Greene, who is currently 13-6 on the season, received the fourth seed in the sectional bracket and will host the contest at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
If the Trojans come away with the win, they could potentially meet Unatego for a third time in as many weeks. However, Greene would host the match-up as they are the higher seed of the tournament. That contest would be scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. if both teams win.
