Man pleads guilty after high speed chase and assault on officer, gets time served

NORWICH – A man who evaded police following a car chase and then was later charged with resisting arrest and assault, pleaded guilty Monday to related charges in Chenango County Court.

Michael P. Piliero, 22, of Earlville pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and resisting arrest. As part of a deal with the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office. Piliero was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail, followed by three years of probation.

Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir Jr. told Piliero to consider the officer's perspectives during the incident.

“You could have killed someone driving like that,” said Revoir. “You’re lucky that you’re not up for vehicular homicide charges right now.”

“Put yourself in the shoes of the officers, they have to wonder if you’re running because you’re some kind of stupid 22 year old, or if you’re running because you’re a hardened criminal with who knows what.”

According to City of Norwich Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach, on the morning of October 27, a Norwich Police Officer attempted to stop Piliero on North Broad Street causing a pursuit that was called off for the safety of the public.

Revoir said the assault on an officer occurred weeks later on November 13 inside the Norwich Police Department.

He said Piliero told probation officers after the incident that his car was lighter than the police officer’s and that the police shouldn’t have stopped or chased him to begin with. He added that Piliero is in a situation where he’s living with his parents, has gotten two separate women pregnant but isn’t caring for them, and is getting in trouble with the law.

“You’ve been given a real gift here, change your attitude because if you don’t I can tell you where you’re headed,” said Revoir.

Piliero eventually spoke out in court and said, “I don't think this is a joke.”

Revoir said Piliero was already held in jail for approximately 45 days in this case, meaning that with “good time” the plea deal would allow Piliero to remain out of jail. Piliero left the courtroom smiling at officials.
