Walking the line: Greene boys win at charity stripe, top Spencer Van Etten in first round

GREENE – The Trojans boys basketball overcame a two-point deficit at halftime to win 58-47 in the Class C first round matchup against Spencer Van Etten on Tuesday night. Greene captured the victory at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
A close battle throughout the entire contest, the Trojans took full advantage of the double bonus in the second half and even more in the final eight minutes of play.
Greene’s final points of the game came at the charity stripe as Nate Barry, Drew Erickson and Nate Parker combined for 16 attempts, sinking 14 in the late game stretch.
The Trojans shot 81.8-percent (27-for-33) from the foul line for the game push the home team into the next round of the Section IV tournament
Barry, who went 7-for-8 at the line, finished with a total of 26 points to lead all scorers. All of Erickson’s points in the game came at the foul line as the eighth-grader took 12 shots, netting 11 while Parker ended the night contributing nine points.
The Trojans held a 14-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter but the visiting team from Spencer Van Etten held Greene to just six points while going on a 10 point scoring spurt of their own before the intermission.
Out of the locker room, Greene’s Barry tallied 11 of the Trojans’ 18 third quarter points to nearly outscore the Panthers on his own. Spencer Van Etten closed out the stanza with 15 but Greene was able to regain the lead heading into the fourth.
Defensively in the final quarter of play, the Trojans held the visiting Panthers’ leading scorer Markus Brock scoreless. Spencer Van Etten did tally 10 points in the fourth behind Noah Mack’s five points.
Brock ended the game with 15 to lead his team in the loss and teammate Matt Byrne also reached double figures with 10 points. Mack chipped in a total of nine for the Panthers.
Greene, the fourth seed of the Class C tournament, will now host No. 12 Groton in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. Groton upset fifth-seeded Unatego with a three-quarter court winning shot, ending the game at 59-56.
The two teams have met earlier this season at the Watkins Glen Holiday Tournament. Greene came out on top of the close 64-60 contest.
The winner will matchup against either top-seeded Watkins Glen or Union Springs in the Section IV semifinals at SUNY Cortland on March 3.
