Oxford stuns No. 6 Elmira Notre Dame with comeback win
ELMIRA – Trailing by as many as 13 points at one point in the second quarter of action, Oxford’s head coach Chris Palmer never counted his team out of the game against sixth-seeded Elmira Notre Dame.
The Lady Blackhawks shocked many over the next two quarters of play, turning around the once double-digit deficit to come away with a 60-57 upset victory against the host Crusaders.
Paced by Caitlyn Quigley’s 17 points, Oxford had five different players score in the contest. What proved to be one of the differences was the Blackhawks had three register double-doubles on the night.
Karley Miller, Madalyn Barrows and Olivia Kelsey all posted double digits in both the scoring and rebounding columns. Miller ended the night with 14 and 10, Kelsey came away with 11 and 11 and Barrows – Oxford’s point guard who played all 32 minutes of the game – finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blackhawks found themselves down 8-0 in the early minutes, forcing Coach Palmer to take a 30 second timeout to regroup his team and get their heads into the action.
Out of the break, Miller scored Oxford’s first two points but the team mustered up just six points in the first quarter while Elmira Notre Dame held the eight-point margin.
The host Crusaders pulled ahead 21-8 in the second as Palmer recalled looking at the scoreboard, stating it was the worst point in the game for his Blackhawks.
However, with Elmira Notre Dame facing foul trouble in the first half, the home team switched to a 2-3 zone defense – the one most made famous by the Syracuse Orange – and it benefitted Oxford.
Miller and Quigley, Oxford’s two forwards, made the inside game work as it aided in the comeback. After the Blackhawks’ used a team effort to chip away at the lead, Quigley made a pass down low to Miller from the high post. Miller finished at the rim to bring the score to 23-18.
Returning the favor to her senior teammate was Miller as she found Quigley on the low block for two points, cutting Elmira Notre Dame’s lead down to just three points.
A couple of trips up and down the floor later, Miller made yet another pass to Quigley on the inside and Oxford nearly erased the 13-point margin as the score was 23-22.
The Crusaders scored two baskets before the intermission to go ahead by five but the momentum was well in favor of the Blackhawks’.
After halftime, nine different Oxford players checked into the game and it made a difference as the visitors turned the game around and pulled ahead by eight heading into the fourth.
In the third, the two teams started out by exchanging runs. The Blackhawks quickly went on a 6-2 run but Elmira Notre Dame responded with a 6-2 run of their own to cling to the five point lead.
Later in the stanza, Kelsey found an open Barrows behind the 3-point arc and the Oxford guard hit the basket to tie the game at 35-35. Following the big bucket from the young Blackhawk, the team closed out the third on an 8-0 run to outscore the Crusaders 21-8 in the quarter.
Oxford held their onto third quarter cushion built for the remainder of the contest, despite the push from Elmira Notre Dame. The home team pulled within two points twice in the fourth quarter but each time the Crusaders made it close, the Blackhawks’ had an answer.

Elmira Notre Dame’s Taylor Vandine had two 3-point tries at the end, hoping to tie the game and send it into over time but both attempts rattled off the rim.
Vandine finished as the Crusaders second leading scorer with 14 points. Teammate Madison Watts led the Elmira Notre Dame squad with 16 points and Kahlia Rivera recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Shannon Maloney added nine points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Ellie Ryan was the fifth scorer, chipping in six points in the comeback effort for Oxford.
The Blackhawks will now go up against the Spartans of Unatego. The two teams have played earlier this season as they are in the same league– the Midstate Athletic Conference – through the regular season. Unatego came away with the 50-43 win.
