NORWICH – Delivering what could be the first 2020 leap year baby in the United States is a role that Dr. Ross Baxter and the maternity nursing team at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital played this last Saturday in February.
The 138 bed rural hospital in Central New York and its 24/7 maternity department has not had helped with a leap year baby in over 20 years, so that made this one all the more special.
Seven pound, 20 inch long Josiah came into the world at 12:02 a.m. on February 29, 2020. Parents Joyce and Michael from New Berlin were a little apprehensive about Josiah’s birth on this elusive date, but have since come to embrace it.
Joyce commented about her feelings “At first I really didn’t like the idea but now that I have had some time to think about it and take a deep breath and hold him in my arms I am very excited and have accepted it.” Father Michael was equally as excited and said “I know he is a special boy and having him on the 29th is just more proof of that, everything is just going our way and this is one more reason to celebrate.”
Dr. Ross Baxter, one of five obstetrics providers in Norwich, has been delivering babies at UHS Chenango Memorial for almost 9 years and at other locations before this. He was almost as excited about Josiah’s arrival as the parents. Dr. Baxter shared “I had delivered babies on every major holiday except Halloween and Leap year until now. We knew it was going to be close and when the nurses took the official time, and it was just after midnight, I knew we had a special delivery. Mom did a great job and she deserves all the credit.”
Having a birthday only once every four years can cause a little confusion when it comes to planning birthday parties. When asked how they think they will celebrate Josiah’s birthday each year Joyce said “just like his brother and sister that he has waiting for him at home, we will have a birthday party every year, probably on March 1st except for those special years when there is a February 29 on the calendar.”
Mom and Dad and Josiah are all happy and healthy, excited to start their lives filled with a unique relationship with the numbers four and twenty nine. The nursing staff at UHS Chenango Memorial and Dr. Baxter shared in the family’s excitement and was glad to play a role in helping this leap year 2020 be a memorable one for all involved.
