Norwich Fire Department proposes False Fire Alarm Ordinance

NORWICH – At the City of Norwich Joint Meeting, Fire Chief Jan Papelino proposed a False Fire Alarm Ordinance.


According to Papelino, property owners who have more than four false fire alarm calls within six months will receive a warning that if they do not fix the properties fire safety equipment, they will be fined $100. If false fire alarms continue, the fee will increase to $250 for each call.


"We've got a couple properties in the city that have been troublesome in the last year," said Papelino. "One property we had 15 calls in the last year. We need to be taking care of things that are more serious."

Papelino contributes many of the false alarm calls to landlords and business owners living out of state.


"The ones we have the most issues with are the landlords in Los Angeles or the businesses that have owners in Texas," said Papelino. "We've got to some how get the attention of these places that they need to do the proper maintenance on these systems and get them fixed."


Alderman Brian Doliver was in support of ordinance, stating he hope's the outcome would be to improve the safety of Norwich residents.
