NORWICH – March 20th, 2020 has been proclaimed Agriculture Recognition Day by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors.

"[The Board of Supervisors] call upon the citizens of this County to recognize the efforts of the members of the Chenango County agricultural community who, on a daily basis, perform their jobs with pride and dedication," said Board of Supervisors Clerk, RC Woodford.

According to the resolution passed by the board, the day was set aside in conjunction with National Agriculture Day on March 24, an annual celebration recognizing the positive impact that the agricultural industry has on every American's daily life.

Chairman Lawrence Wilcox presented a certificate of recognition for the day to Bradd Vickers, President of the Chenango County Farm Bureau.

"It's an honor to accept this proclamation on behalf of the Agricultural industry," said Vickers. “Agriculture is the number one industry in Chenango County and New York State.”

Vickers stated that in 1790, 90 percent of the american population were farmers. Today, only two percent of the american population serves as farmers.

"According to the latest statistics, by 2050 it is projected that there will be 9.2 billion people on the planet. Recent estimates suggest that food production will have to increase by 70 percent if we are to feed everyone," said Vickers.

In honor of the proclamation, Wilcox read aloud "So God Made a Farmer”, which was a speech given by radio broadcaster Paul Harvey at the 1978 Future Farmers of America convention.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silo Restaurant in Greene, The Chenango County Farm Bureau will be celebrating National Agriculture Day. The theme of this years event is "Food brings everyone to the table". The event will feature exhibits from FFA students and speech from a legislator or other state representative
