GREENE – How do you like this war? Horrible to say the least.

The Greene Legion Post and our many Veterans are reexperiencing a modern war with this Cvirus. Obviously, many of our routines, meetings etc in the Post are on hold until the crisis passes. This writer’s life like yours has been upended. I was away down South when my wife and I felt we needed to get back along with many others.

It does remind of war. We don’t know when it will end, how many will get the virus, how many may die. It reminds me of the start of WW 2 Germany and Japan seemed to be unbeatable. Our ships had been sunk at Pearl Harbor, we didn’t have enough ships and planes to save the troops in the Philippines, Wake, Guam etc. Europe was in darkness controlled by the Nazi’s and the negatives went On and on. During WW 2 most things were rationed or we lived without. Were the Japanese going to invade on the West Coast? Was Hitler going to invade the East Coast? They were unstoppable. But we as a nation pulled together. We built up the supplies, trained and sent our troops to victories. Any troop who goes to war knows they may not come back. But, God helped America, God helps our troops to overcome the obstacles. May we as Americans remember we shall overcome as we have in the past. I would challenge us who have health to call or visit veterans and folks who are isolated or alone.

If there is a death and or request for a military presence at a funeral or committal of a local veteran please contact Commander Larry Bourque at 656-9047. If you have a question about the Post, donations, activities, and or want to buy items (Flags-grave markers, branch cups, etc.), call us at or drop a note at our PO Box 149 Greene, NY 13778.

All official business should go to our mail box. Also please put tattered flags in the lectern we have on the S Canal St entrance to the Greene library. The Library has Paver applications for the All Wars Memorial. That Memorial is open to anyone From or related to someone from Greene. Please check the STVSG.org web page and our Greene Legion web page for veteran activities in the area.

If you have a veteran, widow, or active duty military member (Guard-Reserve-Active) in need of help, please call any of the following groups:  Veterans Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255, Binghamton Vet Center 772-2393, VA Outreach Center 772-9100, County Outreach Officer 724-1299, Southern Tier Veterans Support Group 205-8332, Post Chaplain, or other questions J Koopman. A whole additional list of support Service are available in a pamphlet put out by the Southern Tier

American Red Cross. Copies are at the Greene Library. If a vet or their family needs help government agencies aren’t responding to please contact Southern Tier Veterans STVSG. Also if a veteran is hospitalized Lourdes or the UHS hospitals Chaplains have access to veteran support materials.

With this culture cancellation of events, school, work etc. I am taking the time to catch up on reading. Our library system has an excellent book out on the 10th
Mountain Division based at Ft Drum. There is so much American History that one can Read about and apply on the Internet.
