Healthcare facilities face shortages of protection equipment
CHENANGO – Health care workers are facing a shortage of personal protective equipment in the midst of coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the N-95 mask is currently the most effective form of personal protection for healthcare workers.
However, according to Dr. Scott Cohen of Bassett Healthcare, both Bassett and UHS are facing major shortages.
“It's harder for us to get personal protective equipment for our health care workers because we are smaller organizations. Bassett and UHS in the grand scheme of things are fairly small,” said Cohen.
On March 24, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the distribution of medical supplies and equipment among New York State hospitals from the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
118,916 N-95 masks, 301,595 surgical masks, 123,735 gloves, 50,793 gowns and 27,485 face shields were distributed between upstate New York hospitals.
In order to extend the life of their supplies, health care workers are having to fall back on less effective protective messures.
One of the things health care workers are trying to do is figure out how to conserve what we have. That maybe putting a cloth ma
According to the CDC, the N-95 masks filters out at least 95 percent of airborne particles, including large and small particles, while a standard surgical mask does not provide the wearer with a reliable level of protection from inhaling smaller airborne particles and is not considered respiratory protection.
Bassett is currently collecting fabric masks, and looking for volunteers to make fabric masks.
According to Bassett's website, while the fabric masks are not a substitute for healthcare grade respirator-type masks, this is a coordinated effort to use the fabric masks to extend the life and supply of the respirator masks.
Most importantly we need to be getting more from whatever sources we can. Bassett has a drop off on 26 Grove street in Coopersto

According to the Chenango County DOH Director of Environmental Health Isaiah Sutton, there is also a personal protection supplies drop off for UHS at the Occupational Health office located in the Tops Plaza in Norwich.
