200 Town of Norwich residents without electricity following pole fire
NORWICH - Approximately 200 residents in the Town of Norwich were without power for more than eight hours over the weekend, and officials said the cause of the outage was an electrical pole fire following Friday’s storm.
According to Chenango County Emergency Operations Center Chief Dispatcher A. Wesley Jones, at 8 p.m. on Friday, near the South Plaza in the Town of Norwich, an electrical pole with a main distribution line began experiencing issues due to a storm.
“A large primary line came into contact with a metal crossmember, and it caused some power issues at 8 p.m. on Friday,” said Jones. “It ended up catching fire and burning through the pole overnight.”
“At 10 a.m., the top of the pole split apart from the rest disrupting the power, and customers in the Town of Norwich were without power until about 6:30 p.m. that night.”
