Sheriff’s camp postponed due to coronavirus

CHENANGO COUNTY - The Chenango County Sheriff Office announced that the annual Sheriff’s Camp has been postponed until next year, and representatives said other events like “Shop with a Sheriff,” may also be at risk due to the coronavirus.

According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, canceling this year’s Sheriff’s Camp wasn’t an easy decision to make but event organizers felt it was necessary because of the coronavirus and the guidelines surrounding it.

“We had an extremely difficult decision to make due to everything that’s going on,” said Cutting. “This is something that we’ve been debating for months, but at this point we’ve decided not to hold camp.”

Cutting explained that keeping children six feet apart in cabins, on buses, and even while out playing would have defeated the social and practical aspects of camp.

“Social distancing at camp is almost impossible, we bus the kids up and would have needed three times the amount of buses to make it happen,” he said. “The housing for campers is closed together too, and the bunks inside the cabins are also pretty close.”
