Only one Chenango County polling site will be open on Primary Election Day

CHENANGO COUNTY - According to Chenango County Board of Election officials, only one polling site located at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will be open on June 23.

Chenango County Republican Commissioner of Elections Mary Lou A. Monahan said from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. those who wish to vote in person on election day may visit the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office at 279 County Road 46 in Norwich.

She said there are only three options for primary voters including, fill out and send in the absentee ballot application using the appropriately marked envelopes, go to the early voting site at the Chenango County Board of Elections Office between June 13 and 21, or vote in person at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on the 23rd.

“Temperatures are going to be taken, questions are going to be asked, and this is likely going to be unlike voting we’ve seen in the past,” said Monahan. “Those who wish to vote in-person should bring their license and expected extended wait times.”

“Social distancing will be strictly enforced and masks will be required.”

She said the number of voters allowed in the building to vote will be limited, and after each vote workers will sanitize equipment. She added that this isn’t the intended procedure for the election in November, but exactly how things will proceed is uncertain.

“The government’s executive order allows active and inactive voters to vote using the absentee ballot due to the coronavirus,” said Monahan. “We’ve never seen anything like this before, and we know people have discarded their absentee ballot applications already.”

“If people are interested in filling out an absentee ballot application but are in need of a new one, they can call our office and we’ll send them out - there is still time.”

Those who are interested in learning more about this primary’s voting circumstances may visit www.co.chenango.ny.us/elections/ for additional information.

“Local polling sites have signs to help spread the word that we won’t be doing multiple polling sites on the 23,” she added. “As per the governor’s executive order, applications for absentee ballots may come in writing, through email, or through fax.”

“The absentee ballot application is used to identify the voter and the reason for the ballot.”
