Task Force to release summer workout guidance

LATHAM – Phase four. The two key words that determined the direction of the first New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) COVID-19 Task Force meeting of the summer, which was held on Wednesday, June 10.
The Task Force – comprised of school district superintendents, high school principals, athletic directors, NYSPHSAA officers, as well as a representative from the New York State Athletic Administrators Association, an athletic trainer, a district transportation director, and members of New York State Education Department and New York State Department of Health – heard reports and updates from Governor [Andrew] Cuomo’s office as well as the state’s Education Department and Health Department pertaining to the COVID-19 crisis and the impact it has had upon education and the reopening of schools.
“Having representatives from these offices provide reports today was extremely beneficial to the work that the Task Force will do over the course of the next few months,” said NYSPHSAA President and Task Force Chair Paul Harrica. “From the reports provided, it is clear school district facilities cannot be opened for student participation until Phase Four is entered. The health and safety of our student-athletes remains our top priority.”
Both the winter sports championships and the spring sports season in its entirety were canceled due to schools closing their doors because of the New York State on PAUSE Executive Order from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office.
The Task Force also discussed and examined the results of a COVID-19 survey, distributed by NYSPHSAA on June 1, to gather a statewide perspective on the impacts and potential response to the COVID-19 crisis. Roughly 6,000 athletic directors, administrators (superintendents, principals and sectional executive directors) athletic trainers, and coaches submitted responses to the survey.
Most of the school districts of the Chenango County fall in Section IV but two – Sherburne-Earlville and Otselic Valley – inside of lines of Section III. Of those who responded to the survey, 16.68-percent of the results came from the two sections.
One of the questions asked in the survey was, “How confident are you with your school opening, as scheduled, in the Fall?” and while some were either extremely or very confident, 76.64-percent of those who responded were somewhat, not so or not at all confident the students would return to the classroom in the fall.
More results determined the highest priorities for the fall sports season to take place were student participation and safety – like transportation while maintaining the six-foot social distance guideline – while the lowest concerns were the championships events and fan attendance.
Before Wednesday’s, NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas tweeted, “We need to continue to examine information and be patient. With so much that is still unknown and nearly three months before the start of school, there are a lot of possibilities and scenarios to explore. Stay safe and stay positive.”
Over 30 people responded to Zayas’ post with all having pushback, stating to let the kids play their fall sports season.
Following the meeting, Zayas said, “Today’s meeting was our first step in addressing concerns and examining readily available information related to the COVID-19 crisis. We are all focused on providing student-athletes with the opportunity to participate this fall with guidance from the Department of Health and in accordance with Governor Cuomo’s restrictions.”
The NYSPHSAA once again tweeted out to his followers at the conclusion of the meeting, saying he felt the first meeting went well.
On Friday, the Task Force will release guidance pertaining to on-campus summer conditioning workouts as well as an update to its Frequently Asked Questions document that NYSPHSAA released on May 7. School districts are encouraged to get acclimated with CDC and local health department guidance as well Governor Cuomo’s restrictions, local laws and policies.
The next meeting of the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force will take place at the end of this month with a date and time to be announced next week.
