NORWICH – A few dozen people attended an event to show support for law enforcement in Norwich over the weekend. Attendees heard messages from local political candidates and activists on why now is the time to protect police.

According to Tri-County Tea Party Patriots Coordinator Gilda Ward, law enforcement is under attack around the world, and it’s time that the people they’ve been protecting have their backs.

Ward said the main speakers included New York 22nd Congressional Candidate Claudia Tenney, Assembly District 122 Candidate Joe Angelino, Assembly District 126 Candidate John Lemondes, 121 District Assemblyman John Sulka, and Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting spoke at the event.

“It is so crucial that we are standing up for our police, and standing with them because they are under attack nationwide and even locally,” said Ward. “There are calls for defunding and even abolishing police here, and we can’t have that.”

“It would cause chaos, it would cause anarchy, it would destroy our local areas, and it would destroy our nation.”

Chenango County Sheriff Cutting spoke at the event, and said it’s important everyone recognizes that when a call for help is made, the police are coming, regardless of the caller’s skin color.

Tenney also spoke at the event, and said police will continue to come under fire from political adversaries, and now more than ever it’s important that people get out and vote to ensure that government positions are held by people who care for law enforcement and the public’s safety.

Angelino said events like this weekend’s help provide a voice to law enforcement in a time where they’re unable to speak for themselves.

Each speaker expressed support for law enforcement, saying now is the time to stand up and let them know people in their communities care.

Ward said she couldn’t imagine living in an area where, if someone was breaking into her home in the middle of the night, she wouldn’t be able to call the police for help.

She added that people often take the police for granted until they’re needed, and that they’re overstretched as it is on top of having to deal with pressure from groups who want to see them removed.

“I can’t even believe I’m saying this, why would anyone want to get rid of them - it’s just unthinkable to me,” said Ward. “These are the people that take a bullet for us, that put their lives on the line everyday, and put themselves between the bad guys and us.”

“Yes I know that there are some people who are police officers who are bad guys, but we can’t paint all of the police officers with a broad brush, it’s just not fair.”

She said police officers are under a tremendous amount of pressure, but when you have legislation aimed specifically at law enforcement to make their jobs harder and cut their funding, no one is going to want to do it in the future.

“A lot of people are retiring and leaving, and that’s how some of these groups are going to get their way,” she added. “There are going to be less and less officers all the time, and it’s really scary.”

“Already in New York City we’re seeing that the crime has spiked, and I really just don’t want to see things like that happening around here.”
