NORWICH – The dilapidated building on the corner of State Street and Mitchell Street will be cleared away by the end of September, after the city accepted a bid to demolish the building.

About six residents were at the 33 Mitchell Street building at the time it collapsed on May 29, 2019, but no one was injured.

The residents were forced to leave the night of the collapse but were able to collect their belongings in the following days. The evacuation was permanent; the building was condemned.

At Tuesday night's Joint Committee meeting, Fire Chief Jan Papelino stated they received a bid from Gorick Construction that fit the job and the bill.

"The lowest bid that we received was $83,380 from Gorick. I was certainly expecting significantly more than that," said Papelino. "I know a lot if the neighbors down there will be glad to see some progress with that. It's a good thing that it's finally getting done and taken care of."
