SOUTH NEW BERLIN – On September 26 the South New Berlin Fire District members and volunteers celebrated the completion and opening of the new fire house.

According to Board of Commissioners and Chairman Sam Gainfort, the project was done in just over six months and cost about $1.3 million dollars to renovate.

The fire house was renovated from the old Valley Supply company building and was done with aid from all the fire district volunteers and members.

“The only community organizations that helped with renovation of the building was the members of the department whom put in countless hours of time in return saved the taxpayers approximately $ 70,000 dollars. Also Barnes Bluestone and counter tops donated the counter tops in the kitchen and event hall,” said Fire Chief Kevin Christian.

"South New Berlin needed a new fire house mostly because the old one had safety issues and the volunteers just outgrew the old one," said Gainfort.

Additionally, Gainfort said they wanted a building that had longevity and could be used for upcoming generations.

"They are planning on this fire house being operational for 100 years," said Gainfort.

Christian explained that they needed a building that could hold up during incliment weather.

“We needed a new firehouse because of damages that occurred during storms. We needed a building that would withstand bad weather to protect our community and their equipment.”

The new building will allow the fire department to run more efficiently and will provide an updated space for community events.

The building has more fire equipment storage, the kitchen capacity is larger, there are now dedicated meeting areas, and adequate apparatus parking for fire equipment. There is sufficient community parking for events, a new HVAC system, new showers and facilities, and enough room for community events inside.

"It is mostly for firemen’s safety and community enjoyment as they have many fundraisers, and community events and dinners throughout the year," said Gainfort.

There are still come improvements the Fire Chief hopes to see done in the near future.

“Due to cost increases of approximately 25 percent during build some cuts had to be made such as paving the driveway and fixing truck bay floors and a much needed backup generator.  Which we hope we will be able to complete in the near future,” said Christian.

This building was funded by the taxpayers of the fire district. The building renovations were paid for by a 20 year bond and money from fire district’s savings.

The fire house has plans to host several upcoming events. Starting at noon on October 4 they will be hosting a Pig Roast. It will be take-out only this year, but will include pork, stuffing, potatoes, squash, dinner roll, and dessert. On Halloween they will be hosting a trunk or treat event from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
