New Berlin breaking ground for new firehouse and community center
A community forum held last year in Summer of 2019 where New Berlin officials, project engineers and volunteer firemen made a presentation on why they need a new firehouse, and how they intend to spend the donations and move to go forward with the project. NEW BERLIN – The Village of New Berlin is hosting a private groundbreaking ceremony for the new firehouse and Chobani Community Center on Tuesday, October 20.
The event is not open to the public due to state COVID restrictions, but the new building is for the public and the New Berlin community.
The project was first announced in 2019 and is supported by a mix of corporate donations from local employers as well as support from the State of New York, collectively providing nearly $1 million to help fund the construction effort. The structure will replace the existing firehouse nearby that was built in 1971.
Design for the new 7,000 square-foot firehouse includes six garage bays, offices and separate rooms for gear, meetings, training and storage. The new structure will help the department continue to proudly serve the village and surrounding areas. The 2,400 square-foot community center will contain a kitchen area and large gathering space so that the fire department as well as local residents and businesses can host events.
This project highlights a strong collaboration and partnership between the public and private sectors for the safety of New Berlin and its residents. The groundbreaking ceremony will include remarks from New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter, Chobani President and COO Peter McGuinness, and Preferred Mutual Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer Jeffrey Lopata.
