CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Health Department is urging residents to maintain social distancing guidelines and use caution as coronavirus cases double in less than a week.
According to Chenango County Health Department Director of Environmental Health and Code Enforcement Divisions Isaiah Sutton, COVID-19 cases are continuing to rise in the county but the upward trend can be quelled with caution from the community.
“The recent uptick in the number of coronavirus cases is a reflection of reduced social distancing and individuals taking trips to areas with larger numbers,” said Sutton. “We have not identified a super spreader event, meaning we didn’t get tens of cases from a single place.”
“We still have an opportunity to turn this trend around, but it will take all of us following best practices to protect those around us.”
Sutton said the most common spread of the virus in Chenango County is family based, with one member of the family getting the virus and spreading it to the rest of the household. He said while the cases have gone from 17 to 46 from last Tuesday to this week’s Tuesday, there will likely be an ebb and flow in cases as the year goes on.
“I think the number increasing depends 100 percent on how cautious the community is,” said Sutton. “Whenever they’re out in public, they should be following social distancing guidelines, wearing masks, and sanitizing when possible.”
He said while facilities like nursing homes are currently are setting their own rules and regulations related to the coronavirus, there may be mandated changes if cases continue to rise.
He added that if you or someone you know feel they may have the coronavirus, they should reach out to their primary care provider for additional information.
Sutton said for those without primary care, they should seek out the New York State Department of Health website for more information on where they can get tested at https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/find-test-site-near-you.
Information from the New York State Department of Health COVID-19 Tracker shows that Broome County still has the highest number of cases near Chenango County at 2,927 positive cases.
Sutton said while there are considerably more cases in Broome County, they have managed to get things to a point where they are recovering from more cases than they are gaining.
“Broome County’s numbers are actually trending downwards, and have been for the last few days,” said Sutton. “With the right practices we can get there too, especially with less cases.”
