Afton man accused of assaulting 70-year-old

AFTON – A man has been charged with assault following an incident in the Village of Afton, where he allegedly punched and kicked a 70-year-old victim.

According to New York State Police Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, at approximately 1:02 p.m. on October 16 New York State Police at Sidney charged Edward C. Hillery, 56, of Afton with third-degree assault.

“A trooper was dispatched by Chenango County 911 to a report of an assault on Main Street in the village of Afton,” said Dembinksa. “An investigation revealed that Hillery punched a 70-year-old victim multiple times then pulled the victim to the ground and kicked the victim.”

“The victim did sustain injuries and was checked out by Greene EMS but did not want to be transported.”

Dembinksa said Hillery was arrested and transported to the State Police Headquarters in Sidney for processing.

She said he was virtually arraigned and released on his own recognizance. She added that the judge issued an order of protection for the victim in this case.
