CHENANGO COUNTY – With non-profit organizations hurting due to the coronavirus, Chenango United Way is seeking the community’s support in reaching its fundraising goal before the holidays.
According to Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, this year’s fundraising goal is set at $425,000 and is being led by John and Marcia Watt.
Monaco said to date, approximately 38 percent of the total goal has been raised, and of that, $117,321 has come from the industry division of the campaign.
“The Chenango United Way’s largest contributor, NBT Bank, has concluded its employee campaign, raising more than $116,000 in employee donations this year and exceeding its internal goal,” said Monaco. “Many more campaigns are still in process and are expected to conclude over the next several weeks.”
“The original idea this year was to run an early campaign because we weren’t really sure what was going to happen with the virus.”
She said with concerns that there was going to be a second wave of the coronavirus hitting Chenango County, United Way representatives hoped to get all of the fundraising out of the way earlier so individuals could focus on their families around the holidays.
“Although we still have a long way to go, as donors may contribute through December, I’d really like to see donations come in sooner this year rather than later,” she added. “We have so many needs in the community that rely on a strong United Way campaign and the COVID pandemic this year has just magnified this need.”
“As we head into the holidays, families are really struggling and the sooner we can reach our goal and allocate these dollars back into the community, the more stable our community partners and families will be.”
Monaco said the need for support from non-profits has increased since the start of the pandemic, but the number of donations and volunteers has decreased.
“We have so many programs that are relying on this campaign, and they’ve been hit by so many challenges this year because of the pandemic,” she said. “Families who are struggling with covid challenges are going to continue to struggle to get their everyday needs met.”
“We need to kick it in high gear, and for those who can we ask that they make the same donation they made last year.”
