NORWICH – The City of Norwich’s Kurt Beyer Park was a topic of discussion at the last joint committee meeting after it was proposed that the park be upgraded to include a splash park, new playground equipment, and more.

At Wednesday night's joint committee meeting there was a presentation to the Norwich Common Council by Design Connect.

According to a statement from City of Norwich representatives, the city won a grant through Cornell University College of Architecture, Art & Planning which allowed students to redesign Kurt Beyer Park in conjunction with the city’s parks commission, department of public works, and SUNY Morrisville.

The project, if it is able to be fully funded, would take place in three phases. Phase one being work on the pool area, phase two being work on the playground and pavilion, and phase three being work on the trials and finishings.

Design Connect Representative Kate Flaherty said SUNY Morrisville met with early childhood education students to figure out how the park could better help children.

“As far as a look at Kurt Beyer today, we obviously have the pool, the playground equipment, the creek, the trials, and the whole network,” said Flaherty. “In terms of recommendations, people recommended upgrading the playground, the trails, the pool, as well as the pavilion, so we’re seeing some common themes.”
