CHENANGO – As the Chenango County Hazard Response Team moves to update its plan, it has reached out to members of the public for feedback.

According to Chenango County Planning Department Director Shane Butler, officials are looking for residents with experience with hazards including flooding, severe storms, winter storms, and tornados.

“We’re trying to come up with action items on how we can make Chenango County more resilient to natural disasters and disease outbreaks,” said Butler. “It really is more about natural hazards, but obviously disease outbreak is something we need to keep an eye on so we have included it.”

Butler said if people have other disaster plan suggestions, they can email him at shaneb@co.chenango.ny.us with that information.

“Please take our Citizen Survey so your input can be incorporated into the Countywide Hazard Mitigation Plan,” said Butler. “As of today we only have 140 responses and we'd like more.”

“Your input will help us develop initiatives to prepare Chenango County residents for future weather events, make our infrastructure more resilient, and allow us to apply for needed funding to implement these programs.”

The survey along with additional information can be found at https://www.chenangocountynyhmp.com/

Butler said the county has assembled a team to update its hazard mitigation plan which addresses hazards that impact our municipalities. He asked that residents please help the team plan for future disasters by completing the county’s survey which will take approximately 15 minutes.

He added that Hazard Mitigation is any action taken to reduce the loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters.

“This survey is designed to gather information from around Chenango County to help us better coordinate activities and reduce the risk of injury or property damage,” said Butler. “These questions are for information-gathering only and do not necessarily reflect any intent or future priorities of any governing body.”

“This information will be shared with municipal, state, federal and county entities for planning purposes only.”

Butler said one of the questions will be related to if the survey taker lives in a floodplain, and if they’re unsure they may visit the FEMA website at msc.fema.gov/portal/home.

“We hope to have the plan complete by next spring or so,” he added.
