Fire in Oxford extinguished before spreading to multiple apartments

OXFORD – An electrical fire in the Village of Oxford was stopped before it could spread throughout an apartment complex over the weekend after an electrical cord overheated.

According to Village of Oxford Fire Department Chief Ron Martin at approximately 11:57 p.m. on Sunday firefighters were dispatched to 8 Greene Street in the Village of Oxford.

“It came in as an apartment fire, and there are multiple rentals in that building so we worked quickly to stop the fire from spreading,” said Martin. “I heard there were some gentlemen that went around before we arrived and pounded on windows to get everyone out.”

“If that is truly the case, then kudos to them because if someone was in that apartment and asleep they wouldn’t be here with us today because of how heavy the smoke was when we arrived.”

Martin said on the way to the station, a volunteer firefighter used a fire extinguisher on the home, which was vital in buying time for the firetruck’s arrival. He said upon arrival firefighters were aggressive and quickly extinguished the flames.

He added that fire was electrically based, and caused by an extension cord covered in clothing that was in use.

“We were pretty aggressive on our initial attack, but if we hadn’t stopped the fire there it would have worked into the ceiling and then we’d have to chase it throughout the building,” said Martin. “Fortunately we got it, and only one of the apartments received fire damage, but the rest received some smoke damage.”

He said firefighters were on scene until 2 a.m. to ensure that the fire was fully out. He added that it’s important people are aware of how much they’re using their electrical cords especially as they head through the holiday season.

“People need to be cognizant of how much they’re running off of their electrical cords, they can heat up and cause fires,” said Martin. “They’re not supposed to be permanent at all, some of them have internal breakers and some don’t, but that won’t matter if wiring heats up as it appears to in this case.”

“When you have a constant draw on something, it just builds constant heat and if there is a material to catch fire nearby situations like this happen.”

Martin said mutual aid was started from Guilford and Norwich, and thanked the volunteers who come out and risk their lives to help others. He added that anyone interested in volunteering for the Oxford Fire Department can reach out through Facebook or at (607) 843-7951.
